He has talked often of the lack of film industry in Britain and how important it would be to create and maintain one. How the money earned should be partially invested in the making of new movies etc. The independents are very much a part of that after all - industry should here understood as the whole of making films, IMHO.
What might make him unhappy is turning the spotlight on him - if British film has received more attention lately, I'm sure, that he feels not wholly responsible for that

No harm to get another award but I can understand what Dunda meant. Even though British film industry may not be big, I thought there were plenty of British movies already in international spotlight before Daniel's movies though. How about all the Merchant/Ivory movies? Frankly I don't quite get the relationship between the award and Daniel. Oh well, if they want to give him an award, definitely not a bad thing.

He seems like a firm favourite in this BIFA awards, almost an award or a nomination every 2 or 3 years. I understand the award. I think it is meant to honour those who brings british cinema and british actors into international scene and I can't think of anyone that is more deserving other than him or Hugh Laurie but then almost everyone thought Hugh Laurie is American thanks to his House MD series. Casino Royale is a british film written by a english writer about a british icon by a british actor. Of course he will feel honoured. Who doesn't. I don't believe in those crap that actors said they don't care about awards and stuff. This is recognition, either from your peers, from your fans or even from your most viled critics, that is the press and the reviewers. Without the spotlight he won't get so much choices in roles and thanks to him people are actually going back to watch his older movies, mostly I believe british productions and that is a boost to the industry hence the award.
Or they just wanted to bring attention to the award show since a look at the nominees they aren't exactly a-list stars of his fame and calibre. But I do believe the award is sincere.
By the way is BArbara Brocolli english or american?

Hugh Laurie? He's been around for so long and I am surprised people would think he is American. Have they not watched Jeeves and Wooster? As to Ms. Brocolli, according to IMDB she is American but I don't really know.funnlim wrote:He seems like a firm favourite in this BIFA awards, almost an award or a nomination every 2 or 3 years. Maybe it's to make up for the NMA that he should have won as Best Male Performer!!! Still harbouring a little......je ne sais quoi?
He deserves the accolade besides we need more publicity of him.....our deep well is slowly running dry.
As for Hugh Laurie....saw him not long ago on the show "In the Actor's Studio". I did not realize that he was originally in Blackadder and has great comic timing. He was lauded for his impeccable American accent in House and was asked how he achieved it so quickly and Hugh said...."A lot of misspent youth." What fun to play a grumpy, cyncial, crippled doctor all the time.

I remember Stuart Little... Tihihihii...Dunda wrote:Stuart Little (he was the dad) and 101 Dalmatiansagrippina wrote:Though Hugh Laurie is great, he has rather concentrated on TV work and not movies? I can't think of any movies with him... So, maybe not really a candidate for a movie award?
Seems as if he has fondness for animals
Maybe he could get an award for most patience with kids/animals on movie sets?
