@ JEC - But their statements are correct - so having Bond ensures him to stay in the publics eye. He obviously was out of luck with most of his decisions and as long as he is popular as Bond, he always has a good chance to strike gold with something else. The bad luck must stop at some point. Personally I would he fine with him doing Tattoo next year and starting Bond at the end. This is a great possibility and I think, the plan. He is busy with two good franchises and maybe Tattoo 2 will even play out better.
On the whole - there is no such thing as an actor, who carries a film just on his name anymore IMO. There are too many examples of major stars failing, because the film is not good or came out at a wrong time, like Tattoo.I just read, that Henry Cavill has another film failing before coming out as Superman. This will probably be a success, but put him in somethhing, that people don't like and he will fail, like the rest.
Put Channing Tatum in ay craoppy film and people won't go see it.
All of Daniels films - apart from Tattoo - didn't turn out as good as I thought. Tim even tweeted, that something was missing in Defiance, that Blood Diamont has had. Certainly not his fault, since he was praised in most of them...

The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..
I just don't want him to get caught in the "Bond curse", something I have hoped he would avoid from the start.Germangirl wrote:@ JEC - But their statements are correct - so having Bond ensures him to stay in the publics eye. But if he is limiting his options (or is having his options limited for him) by playing just Bond and Dragon, then he (imo) loses that edge he has (or used to have) with more avant-garde film makers in getting the more imaginative and innovative roles which stretch and push his art.
I know I am in the minority in worrying about this. Most people are either not worried, or couldn't give a fudge as long he carries on churning out Bonds, or are happy with repeating the mantra "it's his choice".
Everyone is entitled to their opinions of course, but as you know, Bond was never my reason for liking Daniel and I have worried about it's effects since the "craig-is-not-bond" days.

We have seen, that things often work out differently, then one would think or hope.. Sometimes for the worse, but there is no reason, it cannot change for the better. He still has the chances to be asucessful s an action star AND thespian.

So sad about Monty . The way I look at Bond is that without it, he might still be a 'Daniel who?' actor outside the UK. I wish he'd do some lower production, indie-house movies like everyone else, but he obviously loves doing/being Bond or he wouldn't have signed on for two more. Bond made him filthy rich, known worldwide, had people (like me) watch his earlier work and be impressed, and Bond got him Rachel. I can't imagine him doing anything differently. What, he has at least 5 homes now? Maybe he turned down a role he now regrets, but the choices he made seemed like good ones at the time. Tattoo with Fincher was a major coup. I think he would have been nuts to turn that down. No one knows if a movie is going to be a hit or not when it's on paper. I don't think he's a one-hit wonder. He can work as much as he wants. And as he says, "It's not bad being known as Bond." He leads a very privileged life and has years and years of acting ahead of him. Too, he started late in life over here. The 'new' stars are all younger. He's unique in that he became such a huge star at his age. Just my opinion. I still respect the choices he makes even though I may not agree with them (C&A - I'm not a sci-fi fan.) This is selfish and I've said it before, but if he gets as popular as Pitt and Clooney, we'll never see him. One movie a year - max and then he and Rachel will live in a cocoon. Be careful for what you wish.

I think, ALL his choices looked good on paper and seemed like fantastic chances at the time. I don't see, that he made a mistake there. But it never worked out the way it was supposed to...for whatever reason - never his fault. He was great in all of them.
But I can't help but wish, he was a secured major star, who is bancable and gets the best scripts first. That might have been true, when he got the C&A and Tatoo gigs, but not anymore. I just don't want him to disappear into second liga, because then, we won't see him either and I don't think, he wants it. He is used to the privileges of being an A-List star now and wouldn't want to miss those. Time will tell, its not over yet,
Bond will keep him in the limelight and who says, he won't do any Indies in between or finally puts up his pwn productioncompany like so many to make the films he wants.
BTW, thinking about it. We do see A LOT more of Clooney and Pitt and co, then we see of Daniel..so major stardome is likely to increase the visibility not diminish it IMO.

After C&A and Dragon under-performing he is not (or may not) be getting his hands on the best scripts first. He may have fight for them, which at his time of life and with his experience he should not have to do.
So although he said years ago that he is an actor and not a business man, that may have to change in order to get to make films he wants to make and not just what he is offered. Given that he is now financially secure, it may be a smart move to start his own production company.

I think yr right jec, about starting his own production company, then he can have a great deal of control of how his films turn out, pierce bronson has his own production company, for films he wanted to make.
It would be very interesting to see if he ever went down that route, wot sort of pictures and stories he would protray on screen.
Lots of war pictures maybe, and i think some strange off the wall pictures which would never be successful but be praised by the critics.
