Daniel Craig Comments On 'Quantum' Success

'Quantum was about keeping it interesting, relevant, and the only way I could think about doing that was just to throw myself headlong into it...'

Written by Devin Zydel on 04 Jan, 2009

It has just been a few weeks since the worldwide promotional extravaganza for Quantum of Solace wrapped up and now Daniel Craig is once again promoting yet another film: the war drama Defiance, which has just gone on limited release in the United States.

Sitting down for an interview with The Times, Craig spoke about his penchant for experimenting with film roles and how he chooses one over another.

With his second James Bond film still playing in theatres around the world, the box office success quickly came up as a converstation point.

After being told that Quantum of Solace had recently passed the $500 million mark worldwide, Craig responded: ‘I wouldn’t know $500 million if it sat on my face. But it would probably be quite nice if it sat on my face. I know that, when it comes down to it, these films are about box office, but the moment I start thinking about the figures, I’ll be stuffed—though maybe I won’t be saying that in a year’s time, when I’ve spent everything.’

While his debut as 007 in Casino Royale scored higher overall when it came to reviews by the critics, the appeal of Quantum as judged by those box office numbers puts these two films on roughly the same playing field (Royale ended up with a $594 million take, while Quantum is at $540 million and climbing).

‘I know that, when it comes down to it, these films are about box office, but the moment I start thinking about the figures, I’ll be stuffed.’ – Daniel Craig

Craig stated that the success of this latest Bond film is even more satisfying than when Casino Royale was certified an overwhelming success upon its 2006 release.
'Quantum of Solace'

Quantum of Solace

He said: ‘The first film was a huge punt, although I think if it had failed miserably, I could have walked away with my head held high and said, “Well, I gave it a go.” But the fact was that it wasn’t. It was a success, and in a way that nobody could have predicted. Quantum was about keeping it interesting, relevant, and the only way I could think about doing that was just to throw myself headlong into it. So I know the work we put in. We didnt have a complete script, so Marc [Forster] and I had to batter it into shape, to find the story we wanted to tell.’

As for the criticisms that Quantum was too dark and humourless for a Bond film, Craig said: ‘Well, I nicked a lot of the ideas about who Bond is from Ian Fleming. But the point is, we did the movie we had to do to finish the story off, and comedy and lightness weren’t relevant. This was a story about loyalty, about friendship, about who you can trust. Gag-writing wasn’t at the top of the list.’

‘Don’t get me wrong, I’m up for a submarine base, as long as the gag works.’ – Daniel Craig

As for Bond 23, seemingly anything is possible now that the Royale-Quantum storyline has seemingly come to a close.

‘I love the idea of putting Moneypenny in the film,’ he said. ‘I’m dead keen to do it. And Q.’ However, Craig stressed that there needed to be some characterization to these two MI6 favourites. He said: ‘I work from the premise that there are millions and millions of people out there who never saw one of the earlier Bond movies. So they don’t understand the martini gag. Or the Moneypenny gag, which is a gag—it had ceased to be a character. So, let’s find out who she is. We can have fun doing that. And, don’t get me wrong, I’m up for a submarine base, as long as the gag works. The problem is that Austin Powers screwed everything up. He exploded the genre. Did I just say that? I did.’

According to producer Michael G. Wilson, preliminary script work is scheduled to commence this month, so keep your eyes on CommanderBond.net for all the latest Bond 23 coverage as it becomes available.

Daniel Craig's Noel boast

Daniel Craig won't play Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher in a film because he claims he is a better musician than the rocker.

Daniel Craig claims he is a better guitarist than Noel Gallagher. The British actor would struggle to carry out the Oasis rocker's wishes and play him in a film because he would have to tone down his superior music skills. Speaking at the European premiere of 'Defiance' in London's Leicester Square last night (07.01.09), Daniel told BANG Showbiz: "Well, I can play the guitar better than he can so I don't know how that's really going to work. He hasn't spoken to me about that yet, but if he wants to make a deal..." Noel recently revealed the James Bond star - who is a huge Oasis fan - would be perfect to portray him in a movie about the band. He said: "I wouldn't be averse to a film about Oasis. I would like Daniel to play me. I said to him, 'If you can swing it for me to get the James Bond theme tune, you can play me if they do an Oasis movie.' " He then joked: "Who would play my brother Liam? I would have to say either Julian Clary or, in his first major role, Jeremy Kyle." Daniel - who was joined on the red carpet by his co-stars Jamie Bell and Liev Schreiber - also said everyone involved in 'Defiance' did it for the love of the project rather than an inflated fee. He added: "All the stories we took were based on fact. It was a really good bunch of people. No one did this film for the money. "We had a laugh, we had to. It was cold so we drank a lot too." The premiere was also attended by 'Pirates of the Caribbean...' star Jonathan Pryce and UK TV presenter Vanessa Feltz.

Craig eyes stage role

4 hours 37 mins ago

James Bond star Daniel Craig is keen to appear in a West End play - but is hoping to avoid classics which are too "complicated" or have "too many lines."

The actor admits he would love a starring role on the London stage, but would only consider appearing in new works, because he doesn't want to take on the challenge of Shakespeare or other legendary playwrights.

He tells The Sun,"If a play came along right now, I would jump at it. I'm very keen on doing new writing with plays - that's where my heart is.

"Not that I don't think that doing the classics is a wonderful idea, but Shakespeare's got too many lines and the other stuff is really complicated."

A report from Leicester Square: Daniel Craig at the `Defiance` premiere
Event - 07-01-09

He wasn't playing James Bond, but actor Daniel Craig showed he can still pull off the polished style of his alter ego at the premiere of his latest film.

Click here for red carpet pictures from the "Defiance" premiere (at dailymail.co.uk)

In a smart grey three-piece suit and with his very own Bond girl - film producer Satsuki Mitchel - by his side, the actor arrived at the European premiere of Defiance in London's Leicester Square Odeon.

But while Craig looked every inch the polished star, guest Vanessa Feltz had a different attitude when she found the cameras on her.

The presenter gave partner Ben Ofoedu a large kiss, before opening her eyes wide in surprise as he lent in to kiss her generous chest.

Her exhibition was in marked contrast to that of the actors and actresses who star in the holocaust-themed action movie.

Craig talked about the true story on which the movie is based, saying it was something he wanted the world to know.

'We didn't do it for the money, this movie, we did it because we loved doing it,' he said.

'We had a laugh - we had to. It was just as soon as I read the material I saw it was something I wanted to get involved in and expose to the world.'

The film tells the story of three Jewish brothers, the Bielskis, who escape Nazi-occupied Poland and take refuge in the woods they have known since childhood.

From there they begin to fight back against the Nazis and are joined in battle by men and women of all ages.

Director Edward Zwick said there was a sense of urgency about telling stories like that of the Bielski brothers while Holocaust survivors were still alive.

'This is the 11th hour,' he said. 'The last survivors at this moment will within five or 10 years all be gone.

'There's a certain anxiety attached to that and maybe some sort of urgency to try to tell the rest of the stories that aren't known.'

He also added his voice to the praise showered on Bond star Craig by his co-stars Jamie Bell and Liev Schreiber, who play the other two brothers, and Alexa Davalos.

'He was always available, he was never in his trailer, he was accessible,' he said.

Bell described the film as educational for him.

'I didn't know about Jewish resistance,' he said.

'Doing this movie has been an incredibly educational process. I've learned so much and I hope this movie will maybe change the perspective on the Jewish people at this time in history.

'They weren't silent and passive, they were incredibly resilient and resistant.'

Craig said he did not have any further projects lined up but said he would be open to doing theatre as well as films.

He laughed off rumours that singer Noel Gallagher wanted him to play him in a film about Oasis.

'I can't play guitar so I don't really know how it's going to work,' he said. 'I heard that this morning, but I'm not sure about it. (Noel) hasn't spoken to me about it.'

A horde of excited fans had braved the cold to catch a glimpse of stars on the red carpet, who also included Ray Mears, Terry Gilliam and Lorraine Kelly.

Defiance goes on general release on Friday.

Daniel Craig's break from Bond
Having sliced off the top of a finger and injured his shoulder making the latest James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, Daniel Craig is keen to give the stunts a rest.

The 40-year-old tells Mandrake he yearns to appear on stage before he returns as Bond next year.
Do not, however, expect him to step into David Tennant's role as Hamlet. "Shakespeare has way too many lines," he said at the premiere of Defiance, at the Odeon Leicester Square. "My ideal theatre piece is about 40 minutes long with no interval."

Wouldn´t that be great. Its on top of my Daniel wish list.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..
