10 questions with Daniel Craig on `Quantum of Solace`

He made a splash stateside with roles in 'Layer Cake' and 'Munich,' but Daniel Craig's biggest breakthrough came when he slipped into James Bond's tux for 'Casino Royale.' While in Chile shooting 'Quantum Of Solace,' aka 'Bond 22,' Craig told Moviefone about how Bond has changed his life, his "big" nude scene and why he's stirred (not shaken) by the thought of making another 007 flick.

1. How has becoming the world's most famous spy changed your life?
The truth is, when you make a big decision in life, you know your life is going to change. But it kind of doesn't. You don't emotionally change. And my life hasn't changed, not in my mind. The physical aspects have changed, sure. I have to do things differently, I have to fight for my privacy, and there's a huge amount of bonuses. But I'm still the same person I was six-and-a-half minutes ago.

2. Does 'Solace' really have twice as many stunts as 'Casino Royale'?
Three times as many. Four times as many! We shot a scene where we're doing this body flight thing, where we're freefalling, and we had to film that within a wind tunnel. I also shot a two-day fight sequence we'd been rehearsing for about three months. That was just physically very hard, because it was just getting hit, basically. But I'm still walking.

3. How do you cope with knowing you're going to be pummeled every day of shooting?
I try to keep my mind as open as possible, because every day presents a new challenge. If I try to plan it in my head, it all goes wrong. But it's all been going pretty well, touch wood.

4. Could you relax a little after 'Casino Royale' performed so well?
That's been good, but obviously it brings up other problems. We were commercially a huge success last time, which puts a lot of pressure on this movie. We have to apply the method we used last time, which is to make the best movie we can, and that's where we're at ... hopefully. It's difficult. But I know from what we've got, this movie is going to be something else.

5. 'Quantum Of Solace' is the first direct sequel in Bond history. How was the decision made to start it where 'Casino Royale' ends?
We hit a mark at the end of the last movie, and the decision was made very early on we should continue that feeling. Bond has had the love of his life taken away from him, and [she] was not what she seemed ... She ripped him apart. And there's a sense of vengeance in him. But it's not what it seems. And we're using that as a springboard for this movie. He's out to get 'em.

6. We hear you got engaged to your longtime girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell on the set?
Getting engaged is a very important thing in someone's life. And honestly, you would be the last to know. That would be the simple fact of it. I would never make an official announcement because I'm not a member of the royal family and I don't have to.

7. On stage, you've appeared in 'Angels in America' and 'Hurlyburly.' Got an itch to hit the floorboards again?
I'd love to. My ideal would be to choose some new writing. I have nothing against the classics, but new writing to me seems like it gives you a chance to try new stuff out, stuff no one's ever seen before. I think that makes for a much more exciting theater experience. I'm constantly looking for stuff.

8. You've earned a reputation as the most physical Bond ever. Is that a hard rep to live up to?
Actually, at the end of this movie, there's a scene we're filming where I'm fat, because I want to get rid of that reputation. Really, I'm just keeping in shape so that if I do have an injury, I can recover quickly. Anyway, I'm going from stunt sequence to stunt sequence, and it's great fun to do. But it's not very Bond-like. Bond used to do 10 push-ups, then smoke 60 cigarettes and drink a bottle of something and then pop a pill. That kept him going.

9. Care to spill the beans on your rumored nude scene?
There's a little nudity. It might not be full nudity. From the ankles down, I think.

10. Producer Michael G. Wilson says he wants to take a break from Bond for a while after 'Solace.' How about you?
We're in no hurry to make the next one just yet. But if something comes up and we get a crazy script, by which I mean a great script, then there would be no reason not to. But right at this moment, thinking about making another is not really in the cards. We're only halfway through this one.

Duran Duran float idea of returning to perform `Quantum of Solace` theme

British rockers Duran Duran are planning on teaming up with superproducer Mark Ronson to record a second James Bond theme - 23 years after releasing the title track to "A View To A Kill".

The band recently chose Ronson to remix a string of their hit singles and will be performing a one-off gig with Ronson in Paris, France on Wednesday night.

And keyboardist Nick Rhodes insists they are keen to collaborate with the 32-year-old again - on a theme tune for forthcoming James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace".

He says, "We'd love to collaborate with Mark on a single for the next Bond film. With him we may even surpass A View To A Kill."

The band's theme for Roger Moore's final outing as 007 back in 1995 is the most successful charting song in the series to date.

I love the opening page. I like this Daniel Craig picture. I sometimes wrote about the new design of our site opening page in the past. But I'm not doing it now. I understood your opinions. I only said I love this new design!

Must have been done just now - Brilliant :D There comments over the past weeks one must say, have been quite funny - talking about madness
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

Quantum of Solace Executive Producer Interview

Recently we visited Treyarch’s office on the Activision campus in Santa Monica to get a sneak peek at the newly unveiled James Bond game, Quantum of Solace. After our demo we got to sit down with the game’s Executive Producer Garrett Young to find out some more about what is going into the making of this major movie-related game:

You’ve said that the balance between the Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale levels included in the upcoming James Bond: Quantum of Solace game is about 50/50.

Garrett Young: Yeah, it is about 50/50 and our game covers the stories of both movies, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Quantum of Solace picks up about an hour after Casino Royale ended. You know, at the very end where he grabs Mr. White? He shoots him and grabs him and he says the name is Bond, James Bond. Deh nah dah nah! So yeah, our game covers both movies, a big story and we pull elements from both.

What order do you play the missions in? Do you play through Casino Royale and then Quantum of Solace or do you jump around?

Garrett Young: That’s a good question; we are being a little creative with that. And the movie guys were fine with that. We kick off the game with the same thing the movie (Quantum of Solace) does. And then we get to a certain point in our story when there’s a tie-in to a character – we had to actually bring the character forward from Casino Royale, he’s not in Quantum of Solace but we put him in and the movie guys were ok with it – and after you have an interaction with this character, it kicks off a flashback to a section of Casino Royale. From there you play through the Casino Royale story before flashing forward to Quantum of Solace. So we’re telling it that way instead rather than a linear path story because we wanted to make it a little more interesting and wanted to tie it in a little closer to what people have seen, even if it was two and a half years ago.

You claim that Daniel Craig is a serious gamer in real life and you have a story about showing him the game. Please share.

Garrett Young: It’s all about having a great relationship with the movie people and the fact that we’ve been on the set three or four times and they’ve given us thousands of photos and we got scripts and updates to the scripts and sometimes that causes problems for us because they keep updating the scripts and so we have to make changes. But when we did get to show Daniel Craig (and the Broccoli family, the long time producers of the Bond movies) the game, we went to Pinewood Studios where they film the movies. So we’re setting up in their conference room and the production assistant on the movie is running around saying “he’s shooting a scene right now and I can let you come out and see the scene, but I don’t know if he can come look at the game yet and have you show it to him.” So we watch them film the scene and then the assistant came back and said “ok, I got a hold of him in his trailer between scenes but he was playing some game with a plastic guitar.” He was playing Guitar Hero! He’s between scenes in his trailer playing Guitar Hero? That’s crazy!

And then we came to see the game, and see himself depicted for the first time in a video game, I think he was a little bit nervous; a little bit anxious. He picked a controller right up and picked up on the first person controls almost immediately though he was getting killed at lot at first until I explained the cover system to him. But when I first met him I think he was a little – I mean, he’s a big gamer. And he was asking us a lot of stuff about what’s in the game, the kind of stuff you would ask if you were a gamer. But I think he liked how he looked, and we’ve gotten more feedback from him after sending him screenshots. But he’d never been in a game before and I’m thinking “dude, you’re in movies all the time, and video games are just another medium like a movie. But I think because he’s a gamer he was a little apprehensive about whether he was going to look like crap. But thankfully he really liked it.

Quantum of Solace is built on top of the Call of Duty 4 engine, but how much of your own work did you have to do to make this kind of first person shooter?

Garrett Young: Our underlying tech is the CoD4 tech. Using that tech gives us a huge bump up, it let’s us push the power of next generation hardware like the 360 and PS3 and not spend our time focused on “the plumbing” of getting things rendering and getting things fitting into memory and getting things reading from the disc. It let’s us focus on the gameplay and iterating on the play spaces. How are we advancing it? How are we pushing it forward? Obviously gamers can see that it’s James Bond and not just some guy in a helmet. It’s the types of scenes you saw in Casino Royale and will in Quantum of Solace, if they fit; since some of the scenes (in the game) are different than those you see in the movie, where we expanded out some things. But it is still a Bond world.

But the other things they’re gonna see (in Quantam of Solace) that they’re not going to see in a game like CoD4, is the third-person cover combat where you can see Bond on screen, and get into cover whenever you want to. You might be able to stop and look for incoming trouble from cover, using the third person camera to peek behind and around corners for enemies. That sort of cover-based combat is the first thing gamers will notice is different about this new Bond.

Also the A.I. It’s something we spent a lot of time on and continue to evolve and make more dynamic. So that when you come into a combat space, it’s going to feel different every time you try it, or every time anybody tries it. It’s not a scripted A.I., there’s a full dynamic A.I. engine going on in the background.

They gave us such a great baseline with the CoD4 engine, it makes it easier for us to push the technology further. Like more destructibles and sh*t flying everywhere on the sscreen. But it also makes for better gameplay, like when you shoot the chandelier and take out two guys with it. We call those “mousetraps”. It’s the kind of stuff Bond does in the movies so we wanted to do that in our game. Bond is always outmanned and outgunned, so he has to use his brains to get out of situations. Sometimes he uses the environment to help solve problems too.

Finally, visually there’s a lot more going off making for a more cinematic experience and conveying the action of the Bond movies. And that’s really the main thing we’re trying to do.

Because of your access to the production of the upcoming movie – the scripts, the photos, Daniel Craig, etc. – are you bummed that the movie has been spoiled for you?

Garrett Young: I guess I never thought about it as a bummer. I thought we got to be some of the very few people in the world who get to see the production of the movie, and that was cool. Of course we’ve seen tons of clips from the movie, we know what the screens look like, we know what Bond is going to say before he says it.

I’ve never mad a movie game before, so im not used to seeing scripts ahead of time. But I don’t see it as a bummer. Getting to meet all the actors was cool, they’re really nice people. Daniel and Judi (Dame Judi Dench who has played M for the past few Bond flicks now – Ed.) and some of the other principles from both movies are really, really nice. And yes, those Bond girls really are that beautiful in real life. Not that many of them have been in video games before. Judi has of course and she was an all-pro when it came to recording her voice-overs. She read it once and I was like “oh, that’s M”.

It was just fun being immersed in the new movie and see them make a new Bond movie. It’s a cool character that we all really like and it’s been great working on this game for the last year.
