22. DEFIANCE

Directed by Edward Zwick, the film chronicles three Jewish brothers’ escape from the Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II and their subsequent addition to the Russian Resistance. Starring Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell.

Oscar Potential: All Categories (Highlight on Acting, if accents are believable)

Expected Release Date: TBA 2008 (2009)

We think: Edward Zwick has proven himself as a successful Oscar-winning producer (Shakespeare in Love, Traffic) and he has done well in the directing category with popular films as Blood Diamond and The Last Samurai under his belt. Defiance, to be distributed by Paramount Vantage, could continue to increase his profile behind the camera.

Gosh, I hope they didn´t screw up the accents - but hey - love it Image
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

Oscars '08: Actors get real

Daniel Craig, 'Defiance'

Though "Casino Royale," his first foray as James Bond, garnered Craig good reviews and a BAFTA nod in 2006, the Englishman has yet to crack the American awards scene. In "Defiance," Craig plays one of three Jewish Polish brothers (with Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell) fighting with the Russian resistance in WWII.

Writer-director Edward Zwick has proven adept at bringing epic stories to the screen ("Blood Diamond," "Glory") and getting his actors Oscar nods -- Leonardo DiCaprio ("Blood Diamond") -- if not wins -- Denzel Washington for "Glory." With Craig looking less studly and more stolid, he could make it into the final five. Even in recent times, WWII-era dramas have garnered lots of Oscar gold with wins for Adrien Brody ("The Pianist") and Roberto Benigni ("Life is Beautiful"), and a nod for Tom Hanks ("Saving Private Ryan").

An accolade indeed, but I hope not actually, Oscar seems to be a deathslide for many actors. Something to do with reaching the pinnacle, followed by an innundation of bad movie role offers, over-exposure, and years trying to "better" the Oscar-winning performance.

Not that I don't think he's deserving, I just quite like Dan being on the cusp of super-star status.

True - has happened to many

For most of us, he is appearent only a short time, but looking on his long list of good and even better films, its about time, he is recognized for what he is - one of the finest actors we have at the moment.

And I have the feeling, its one of the few things awardlike and such, that he really wants. Its up to him, to not screw it up afterwards.
