Dream House - news and tidbits

Is it OK to open a new topic here? It's been reported that DC will start filming Dream House in the beginning of 2010 in Canada. I wonder if that means Toronto where many recent movies have been filmed because it's cheaper and there's a good infrastructure of technical support companies. Vancouver, B.C., is another filming location, but that city is hosting the Winter Olympics in early 2010. If it's Toronto, maybe our DtD Toronto members can keep the information flowing to us during filming.

Some trade papers are saying Dream House sounds like a run-of-the-mill horror flick, except that it's got an award-winning director, Jim Sheridan, who's won and been nominated for directing, writing, and producing awards for films like In the Name of the Father, My Left Foot, and In America. All with Daniel Day Lewis, who is known to be picky about his roles.

DC surely knows fellow UK person Jim Sheridan, who is probably one of the reasons why DC would agree to this part. I hope the script is good too. David Loucka is the writer; his resume isn't impressive.

Craig will play a successful publishing executive who quits his job in New York City to relocate his family and two daughters to a beautiful house in a small New England town. They soon learn their home was once the murder scene of a mother and her children, believed to be at the hands of the husband who survived.

The film will be directed by master storyteller and acclaimed director Jim Sheridan, who has been nominated for six Oscars, two Golden Globes and has directed seven actors into Oscar-nominated roles. His previous works include My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, and In America. His next film, Brothers, starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaall and Natalie Portman, will be released this December 4.

Daniel Craig is currently preparing for his Broadway debut in A Steady Rain directly by John Crowley and co-starring Hugh Jackman. His previous theatre credits include Hurlyburly with the Peter Hall Company at the Old Vic, Angels in America at The National Theatre, and A Number at The Royal Court Theatre. In 2006 Daniel made his debut as the sixth 'James Bond' in Casino Royale, for which he received a BAFTA Award nomination (Best Actor). 2008 saw Daniel's second outing as James Bond in Quantum of Solace. He recently finished making Steven Spielberg's new film The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn. Other film credits include Defiance, The Road to Perdition, The Golden Compass, Flashbacks of a Fool, Elizabeth, Love is the Devil, The Mother, Sylvia, The Jacket, Layer Cake, Enduring Love, Munich, and Infamous (Independent Spirit Award nomination). Daniel's television credits include the BBC's adaptation of Michael Frayn's award-winning drama "Copenhagen," "Our Friends in the North," "Sword of Honour," and the two-part BBC film "Archangel," based on RoBert Harris' book of the same name.

Dream House will be produced by Morgan Creek's James G. Robinson along with David Robinson and Daniel Bobker & Ehren Krueger. The screenplay was written by David Loucka. I wonder, too, if he'll use an American accent.

I'm not bothered by his American accent (I'm an American, raised in California). If there are oddities in the way he does an American accent, I think all Americans have some oddities in the way they speak. Probably just like anyone speaking their native language.

Even Russell Crowe, who is reported to have the most authentic American accent, can sound "off" sometimes. I like his movie The Insider,. I've watched it a number of times (because I like the story and the movie), but I know it well enough now to get past the story and notice little things like Crowe's accent.

Maybe that's the important point - if the moviegoer feels the actor's performance is damaged by his accent, then that's when the accent is a liability.

I liked that short part DC had in Fateless. He was doing a New York City Brooklyn accent, I think. Of course, I don't really know what a actual real Brooklyn accent is supposed to sound like (because I've never lived in Brooklyn), but he sounded good to me.

One thing I notice, though, is that there's something about the sound of his voice that seems to change when he's doing an accent. In Defiance, when he's speaking Russian, his voice seems less resonant, kind of tinny-sounding.

I could listen to his normal voice all day. I love his English accent, and I love the sound of his voice.

NY is a melting pot of accents .

I think one brit who has various convincing accents has been Damien Lewis . Dan hasn't impressed me with his accents so far except in Defience .

I'm sorry - I am the prickliest person I know right now, lots simmering under the surface.

It would be nice to see a nice warm and fuzzy pap pic of DC being DC again, without Hugh by his side for five minutes.

How lucky you live in Toronto! Maybe you'll see him. Please give us all the rumors and news. Is there a "Good Morning, Canada" type morning TV show in Toronto, with an entertainment commentator who might have some DC news every so often? Or an entertainment column in the Toronto newspaper that might mention him and where's he's been seen?

Wonder how long filming will take? Typically three months? Please keep us informed during those three months!!

A number of movies have been filmed in Toronto, right? Are there certain places where the actors like to stay? Probably DC will look for a building with a gym, like where he is in NYC. It would be interesting to see what kind of restaurants they like to go to. I'm assuming SM will be there with him. If they go out, where? DC said once that he's in bed by 9:30pm when he's filming, and Bond producer Michael Wilson said that DC is a very disciplined worker.

He's in NYC right now, but we're not hearing very much about him, and there haven't been many photos. What a dry, dry time!
