Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig Are Fundraising Champs

Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig are film stars, acclaimed stage actors and, now, the top fundraising team in the history of the annual Gypsy of the Year competition.

The duo, who co-starred in the recent Broadway hit A Steady Rain, were presented with the All-Time Top Fundraising Award at the Dec. 8 Gypsy competition, held this year at the Palace Theatre. In fact, Jackman and Craig raised a whopping $1,549,952 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. (The 21st annual competition brought in an all-time record total of $4,630,695.)

Just how did the dynamic duo manage this feat? What follows are just a few of their fundraising methods:

Autographed posters for $300 apiece; signed Playbills for $60 each.

Jackman and Craig's T-shirts, which were worn during the show, fetched anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 nightly.

Backstage photographs with any audience member willing to make a $2,000 donation to BC/EFA. There were as many as ten people a night posing with the stars.

Bucket collections in the lobby of the theatre.

The all-time high for one performance, it should be noted, was $64,850. At that Dec. 3 performance, three autographed t-shirts sold for $12,000 each.

Helping Jackman and Craig raise this extraordinary amount were stage managers Michael Passaro and Pat Sosnow as well as the crew, dressers, security, front-of-house personnel and stage door men.

In a statement Tom Viola, executive director of BC/EFA, said, "Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig are extraordinary men. Their goodwill and outstanding generosity of time and energy will be the stuff of legend."

A Steady Rain marked the Broadway debut of Craig, known as the latest James Bond in the famed film series. In London he has worked with the Royal National Theatre (Angels in America), the Peter Hall Company at the Old Vic (Hurlyburly), and he was nominated for a 2002 London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor for his performance in A Number at the Royal Court Theatre. His film credits include "Defiance," "Quantum of Solace," "Flashbacks of a Fool," "The Golden Compass," "The Invasion," "Casino Royale," "Infamous" and "Renaissance," among others.

Jackman, who was recently seen on screen in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," earned a Tony Award for his work in the Broadway musical The Boy From Oz. He is also known for his film roles in the "X-Men" trilogy, "Someone Like You," "Swordfish," "Kate and Leopold," "Van Helsing" and the recent "The Fountain" and "Happy Feet" (in voice). His stage credits also include Trevor Nunn's staging of Oklahoma! at Britain's National Theatre and award-winning work in productions of Sunset Boulevard and Beauty and the Beast in his homeland.

BC/EFA is the nation's leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization. By drawing upon the talents, resources and generosity of the American theatre community, BC/EFA raises funds for AIDS-related causes and other critical illnesses across the United States. Since its founding in 1988, BC/EFA has raised over $170 million dollars for critically needed services for people with AIDS and other serious illnesses. BC/EFA is the major supporter of seven programs at The Actors Fund - including The AIDS Initiative, The Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative, The Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, The Dancers' Resource and three supportive housing residences.

BC/EFA also awards annual grants to over 400 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide. For more information visit www.BroadwayCares.org.

Boy, this makes me want to hang onto my signed playbill even more. We were very lucky to have had them sign them and get photos before the big fundraising thing happened.

I'm glad that they are being recognized for this effort and I'm amazed at how much these items sold for, every night.

Up date on the charity bid to have a photo with DC taken by STW. We were the highest bid for 4 days at 5200 pounds. I was feeling excited and sick at same time, the at the weekend more bids came in and crept it up to 5500 pounds. Then on the last day last few minutes it went from 7,800 to 12,100 pounds. The person that won only placed one bid in the last two seconds and blew everyone out of the water. Lucky fan. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

Sometimes its NOT good to be right. Sorry Christine - but give it as bright side - you had the excitement to actually have some hope to have this AND what a superb way a hubby shows his love AND trust.

We would have had another reporter just on the front :(
In a way, I would have felt a bit sad though, if nobody would have paid a good price for him - so I feel a bit divided here.

ONSTAGE & BACKSTAGE: A Dressing Room With 007 & Wolverine

By Seth Rudetsky
14 Dec 2009

..........

Before the show, I went to my dressing room and saw that all the male presenters were sharing the same one. BC/EFA had told me Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman would be using it, but I figured it was just a courtesy…they would probably be in the audience for the whole show and then come onstage for their presentation. Cut to, I walked into the dressing room and saw two statues of David. That's right, Daniel and Hugh were both there and when Hugh went into the bathroom, the door jammed as he tried to get out…and I opened it up. That's right! I saved Hugh Jackman from being locked in Matt Cavenaugh's dressing room toilet. I'm now waiting for my "reward" and if this is being read by a certain Aussie hunk, I can be contacted at my website, www.SethRudetsky.com or my private one: www.IHeartWolverine.com. I'm sure you've read about the fact that they raised more money for BC/EFA than any other show in history: more than $1.5 million dollars! They did it mainly by auctioning off the T-shirts they wore during the show…for about $15,000 each! Wowsie! They got their award at the end of the show and Hugh whispered to me if I was going to thank Tom Viola. I told him that Julie and I didn't have it in our script and he should do it. He was so gracious and first thanked me and Julie for hosting and then thanked Michael Graziano, the producing director and Tom Viola, the executive director of BC/EFA. After the show, Daniel came up to me…and hugged me. Still in shock. I haven't washed my second-through-fifth ribs for the last week.

Jackman and Craig Raise $1.5 Million, Shattering All BC/EFA Records

When the actors best known as Wolverine and 007 teamed up as Chicago cops in Keith Huff’s drama A Steady Rain, no one expected Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig to raise more than $1.5 million for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, breaking every conceivable BC/EFA fundraising record.

But the combination of their star power, generosity of spirit, and an incredibly supportive producing team and backstage crew – led by the stage managers and tireless BC/EFA supporters Michael Passaro and Pat Sosnow – helped the handsome duo turn white T-shirts into gold!

At the end of each performance, Jackman and Craig would auction off the tee shirts they wore during the play – with winning bids ranging from $3,500 to $15,000 each – which they would date and sign for the auction winners. These auctions, combined with sales of autographed Steady Rain posters and Playbills, bucket collections and nightly backstage photo ops with the stars – which sold for $2,000 each – helped this two-character play average $30,000 a night!

Historically, musicals have been the top fundraisers for BC/EFA with shows like Wicked, Jersey Boys, The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera – typically playing in larger houses of 1,800 seats or more – taking top honors at BC/EFA’s Easter Bonnet and Gypsy of the Year Competitions.

Miracle in the Making
In 2008, however, two plays did extraordinarily well, thanks largely to the overwhelming generosity and leadership of their stars. Equus, starring Daniel Radcliffe, raised $203,000 last fall and in the spring, Jane Fonda and the cast of 33 Variations raised $183,500!

Jackman’s return to Broadway was another positive sign. Five years ago, he flexed his fundraising muscles while dazzling audiences as Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz, raising $1,172,000 over two six-week fundraising periods – $632,000 in fall of 2003 and $539,000 in spring of 2004.

And with the combined star-power of this dynamic duo, Craig and Jackman enabled A Steady Rain to beat that total by over $400,000 in just one six-week period.

In honor of Jackman and Craig’s efforts, BC/EFA has made a donation of $75,000 to the British and Australian entertainment community HIV/AIDS fundraising organizations: TheatreMAD and Oz Showbiz Cares.

“What Hugh and Daniel have done for Broadway Cares is truly a miracle,” said Executive Director Tom Viola. “Their generous enthusiasm and good will is extraordinary. Audiences have been delighted. But what their efforts mean for AIDS and family service organizations across the country will be remembered long after the autographs on those auctioned tee shirts have faded.”

“They are simply great guys!”

Why am I not surprised? Two stud muffins together on stage, selling their clothes and offering a backstage photo session? That has to have an impact
