'Dragon Tattoo' sequel still on track, Sony says

According to Sony, the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire, is still moving forward despite the lingering perception that Dragon Tattoo has underperformed. “[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book,” a Sony rep tells EW. In November, Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal told us that The Girl Who Played With Fire was definitely a go, with a targeted late-2013 release date. But Dragon Tattoo, which has grossed $60 million in the U.S. since its release on Dec. 20, is being perceived as something of a box-office disappointment (although moviegoers are enthusiastic — it received an A from audience-survey firm CinemaScore — and it seems to be holding up well over time as it chugs toward the $100 million mark). Given the film’s merely decent performance, there’s been much speculation about whether Sony will now actually move forward with the sequel. But the Sony rep tells us that “development continues” on the sequel and Steven Zaillian is still working on the script as planned. So far no director has committed to the project (Fincher hasn’t yet decided whether to return), but according to Pascal, stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are both already signed up for the other two films. Last month Mara told EW she’d love to play Lisbeth again. “I don’t feel finished with the character,” she said. “I’m not ready to go back there yet, but I think by the time we start, I will be.”

Oh, great news about sequel/s (?). Thanks, Caramel. International market has barely been tapped with Scandinavia and UK, it's a potentially big chunk as well, I hope.

What a nice surprise!
Gotta agree with their #1 choice - Fassbender in 'Shame.' Woweeeeeee - getting to look at his jumbo peepee is worth the price of weekend evening admission complete with jumbo popcorn and jumbo Coke (only jumbo items are appropriate for this movie.)

You should see it. SERIOUSLY. VERY, VERY impressive. Not many men would have the guts or endowment to pull that off.

BTW, for any 'fellas' who care, Carey Mulligan is completely nude, too. Full frontal. It's not a sexy story; it's a sad story of sex addiction.

Just a quick comment about nudity in movies and more specifically, DC's nudity - From what Daniel has said, he has no problem getting his 'kit' off (or whatever it was specifically that he said.) I don't for a second think that he's objected to taking off any item of clothes in his films, do you? If he were just a piece of meat, he'd be lucky to make it into pornos. Obviously, he's a lot more than that - a great actor with the good fortune to be handsome (thank you parents) and has taken it upon himself to build that great body to show off in films. Like all actors, the man has an ego. A huge one. He knows what he's doing when he strips off his shirt or pants.

The Wikipedia on Motion Picture Association of America' Rating System is interesting, but I found this appealing as I do enjoy looking at well-built nude men.

With the growth of the home entertainment market since the late 1990s, a successful marketing vehicle for NC-17 films has emerged. Since R ratings are preferred for theatrical exhibition, filmmakers often cut films to meet the requirements. The "uncut" (either unrated or NC-17) version is sometimes released in limited engagements, other formats (such as DVD or Blu-Ray), and in foreign markets. This practice has become commonplace as an enticement to sell the movies for home entertainment use.[citation needed]

Regarding the disparity in lighting between Lisbeth's and the rapist's rape scene, I can make sense of it. The rapist pig got off on raping her. He saw her as a sex object and wanted all the lights on to maximize his experience. Too, she was on the bed so it was easy for him to light her on all sides. Lisbeth didn't get off on raping the fat pig. She got nothing sexual from it and and just wanted to inflict humiliation, pain, and a tattooed message on him. It's possible that even having to look at his penis repulsed her, hence maybe why he's covered up there rather than clipping the frame higher (just a wild guess.) Anyway, I could understand why she wasn't focused on lighting up his fat, disgusting body.

Some preliminary, intro text before what's posted....
........

Blomkvist and Salander become lovers, and they uncover some disturbing Vanger family secrets, which lead to violent confrontations and terrifying links to serial killers from the past and in the present.

Looking fit, and as feisty as ever, Craig is at the fashionable Crosby Street Hotel to talk about his Dragon Tattoo involvement, but he makes two things clear: Off limits are questions regarding his new Bond movie, Skyfall, and his recent marriage to actress Rachel Weisz.

Q: What’s the key to taking on an iconic role?

A: The less you think about what other people think in this industry, the better, and the more original you can be.

Q: Was that your approach with Blomkvist and Bond?

A: You can’t go into a project thinking, “Oh, how would these people like it?” You must get on with what you want, and be single-minded about it.

Q: Blomkvist is not the macho Bond type, right?

A: I wanted to put a reality into (Blomkvist). He gets shot at, and he runs away — I mean, screaming, just like anybody else would. That was really the key.

Q: Did you portray him like an Everyman?

A: I believe I did. What I love about him is the connection with Salander. He doesn’t have to prove he’s a man. He doesn’t have to go around beating his chest. And he’s very happy to fall into this sort of relationship where she’s literally wearing the trousers.

Q: Did you feel the burden of great expectations filming the movie?

A: I think we have 65 million readers of the book. And we have lots of people who have seen the Swedish/Danish version of the movie. And we may get millions of other people to see this movie. Everybody will go back and read the book, and watch the Swedish version. It’s a win/win.

Q: Is the Blomkvist-Salander alliance the story’s main attraction?

A: Yes. They come from completely different social classes. But I think Salander’s never really learned to trust anybody. There are very few people in her life that are straight with her. And he is.

Q: What’s their connection?

A: Blomkvist walks into her life and says, “I think you’re great. I’d like to work with you. And I’ll walk away.” And I think it just appeals to her.

Q: Did the long rehearsal period help?

A: The more preparation you have, the better chances you have on the day.

Q: What about the filming process?

A: We didn’t do one thing in sequence. We shot the end of the movie first, so you always had to know where you were, and had to make sense of it.

Q: Did Fincher include you and Mara in the creative development?

A: We all got involved with mapping out the complex film. And it’s a testament to David’s skill as a director that it all remains very interesting.

Q: Were the intimate scenes between Blomkvist and Salander difficult for you and Mara?

A: No.

Q: Would you elaborate?

A: No. That would be weird.

Q: So sex scenes in movies aren’t difficult?

A: No, of course not.

Q: Really?

A: Intimate scenes on a movie set are just dry, bizarre things; people standing around. And I don’t make those other kind of movies. (Smiles.) Not for a long time, anyway.

No, I don't think he would object, especially if the story demands it.

Interesting though the final comment from the interview above where he says he hasn't done "the other kind" of movie for a long time. Now he could have been pulling the interviewer's leg or just toying with the gossips, or he could mean he has done things in the past where he felt something was a bit gratuituous.

And that was my point (and I think possibly NBG's?),that the nudity in his films should not be done just with the object of satisfying voyerism. That turns him into a piece of meat rather than a fine actor doing a good job. What's the point of it, if it is not part of the story other than using him as an object of lust?

As I said before, I like looking at his wonderful body as much as the next person, and have certainly taken my turn contributing to things like the"dressing left" thread etc. But there comes a point where (for me personally) there is a line between fun and frolic and treating Daniel like a piece of meat......and it was that point I was trying to make.

The other point was that, outside of the storyline, he should not have to do it to satisfying voyerism. If he wants to pose naked (a la Burt Reynolds in Cosmopolitan....showing my age here ) then that's his choice and he then squarely places himself in that position and would surely not complain.

But just remember his reaction to the blue trunks. He did say later that he chose the trunks, they were chosen to showcase him and create an effect, but he was also dismayed that critical acclaim got pushed to one side because of it . That reaction makes me think that he does think about things like gratuituous versus artistic licence and necessity. And that was part of my point, when one diverges too wildly from the other then he just becomes a piece of meat.
