Hmmm... it's good. Daniel should read this himself. 8) But I still feel that Daniel isn't mentioned enough in specific terms... they're just talking about his impact as Bond and it should be a given that that is a phenomenon in itself. Daniel, as an actor, should NOT just be measured against his performances in the Bond movies. Just my 2 cents.. :brood:

GG, yes, it's the first, and so far the only one. I have them all - the 12 novels and the 2 short story collections - and I intend to read them all. Not in a row, I'll read something else in between each of them, probably. I'd like to skip to the SF inspiration novels now, but I intend to proceed chronologically - that's the plan, anyway. So... 1 down, 13 to go... ugh. The things that man makes me do... *sigh* I mean, I hadn't even thought about reading a Fleming novel before I saw CR. And even doing the SF interviews he kept talking about Fleming and the novels. As did Sam Mendes, but I consider him innocent, really, since if it wasn't for Daniel Sam wouldn't have been there talking about Fleming (or indeed reading Fleming, probably). So I blame Daniel. (He made me read the Larsson book before this, and goodness knows what else in the future.)

CR is miles better as a movie, btw - naturally, but it was interesting to read anyway, to see how the basics of the story were kept intact while it was updated to modern times and improved upon, made more cinematic (visually spectacular elements added), and humour added. The movie is funnier, more romantic, has a more complex plot, there's more action, Vesper is a more interesting character, there's better dialogue, it's more emotional and more dramatic. I still found the book interesting, and at times I admired Fleming's visual, descriptions. As far as I've understood CR is a far more faithful adaptation tho than most others. I intend to find out for myself, plus I want to get a better grasp of what his Bond is like as a character.

A couple of examples of the descriptive language I liked:

-----

The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning. Then the soul-erosion produced by high gambling - the compost of greed and fear and nervous tension - becomes unbearable and the senses awake and revolt from it.
[the beginning of the book]

---

The tall back of the chair looked impassively out across the dead body in its arms.
[it was, of course, an arm-chair]

---

In the silence, the cheerful small sounds of the summer's day crept through the closed window. High on the left-hand wall hung two small patches of pink light. They were reflection cast upwards from the floor by the zebra stripes of June sunshine, cast upwards from two separate pools of blood a few feet apart.
As the day progressed the pink patches marched slowly along the wall. And slowly they grew larger.

-----

I remember a lovely one about the playing cards, but can't find it now.

Also, there is a discussion in the novel where Bond talks about about heroes and villains getting mixed up, and how it's not as clear-cut or black and white, and how when times change what they're fighting for or against changes. So that aspect was there from the very beginning. I thought that was interesting.

Yes.

In the book she becomes deeply paranoid once her and Bond decide to go to stay in a house in the country. She starts to think that a car is following them and slowly becomes more and more insecure. Her paranoia is tipped over the edge once she catches sight of Gettler, a man in SMERSH's employ. She knows that Gettler is there to kill her for her unsuccessful mission to recover Le Chiffre's funds. Knowing she is doomed, she sleeps with Bond one last time and they have a rather haunting good-bye together. Bond awakes in the morning and hears the news of her death and reads her note.

It was likely a combination of things that caused Vesper to take her own life:
1. Firstly, she was likely feeling very guilty over the part she played in the death of her boyfriend (the one who was kidnapped)
2. She knew regardless of how happy she was with Bond, SMERSH would likely come looking for her. They came to find and take care of Le Chiffre so it was only a matter of time before they came for her.
3. Knowing Bond wouldn;t be able to stand the sight of her let alone trust her.

She's really a very haunting, intense and enigmatic figure in the book. What makes her so special is that Bond is very arrogant and takes great pride in being able to read people and the odds at a mere glance, Vesper is the only person he can't crack and she ends up breaking his heart as a result.

In the boook, it was never clear, why she would kill herself. She could have trusted Bond to take care of them (like he did) The way, she said Good Bye to him didn't give a hint, she was going into a dangerous situation. It always bothered me. Bad script for that, I say.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

In the film; that moment in the hotel should have been a final heartbreaking moment as Vesper should have known she was doomed and Bond would have had no idea. It was a bit of a mis-step to have her be so nonchalant

She did grab his face and take a long look at him though

Yes, but like you say, this last longer look was about all she did, that was a bit of an indication. They missed oput on that.

Perhaps she thought she could just hand over the money and walk away back to Bond. That's how the scene played out, it was only when Bond showed up after discovering that the funds had been transferred that the bad buys grabbed her and essentially used her as bait/hostage.

I'm seriously freaking out now... and not in a good way. Today, I brought the latest edition of Total Film magazine. It has an article called "The Future 100" where it lists what is happening in the film industry over the next few years. There is a very small piece - no more than 20 words - about Bond 24. It states that this is not released until 2016!!!!!!!!!!!????????

WTF????!!!!!!!! :? :(

It had better be a typo or the magazine has got their info wrong, which I am sure they occasionally do. I was quite confident that it would be coming out in 2014. It's not even the fact that I can't wait that long to see another James Bond movie either. It does have everything to do with how long I have to wait to see a new Daniel movie. I wish I knew what he was thinking right now. If he wants to take time off to spend with family, that's fine. Maybe he thinks he can't do or have everything. WELL, HE CAN!! He just needs to be organised that's all. 2016 really does feel like forever to wait for him to work on another project. From now until then, that is one Dry Spell I don't think I can cope with. I know none of us know what will happen in the future but...... I'm just so worried about this now. :? :( I don't want to go on google or the MI16 website in case it panicks me even more.

I am reading the Bond boards and they know nothing either. Seems, they might have problems finding a director, because the wellknown ones are scared. Once Bond was not good enough for them, now its too big. But those film mags have no more info then the rest of us. Why? Because EON is not going to say a word, before they HAVE something to say. So its guessing work. Of course, 2015 is possible, but 16 is out of the question, because Babs wants 2 more out of her golden boy and 16 makes that questionable. Logan has written on the script for some time, but nobody knows, how far developped it is. Or how far they are in their finding of a new director. They will lie through their teeth until the last moment.

But, even if it was 16, he would make another 1 or 2 films inbetween. Its not that he stopped working forever. Guess, he is waiting again what happens (the price he pays for Bond) and in the meantime enjoys life. But at some point, things will be clearer and he can choose his next job.

My gut is tells me that (1) Sam would be foolish to take on 24 (except for the money) because it would be extremely difficult to match or top 23. Everyone wants to go out on a high note. All his busy schedule stuff is nonsense. Obviously, if Babs can wait until 2016, she can wait for Sam. (2) Yep, as already said, 23 raised the bar for other directors. A 'qualified' director might be reluctant to take the risk. (3) 23's success is the reason for the delay. It's that 'bar is higher' reason.

Too bad Sam won't ride out the Bond wave with Daniel. I get his point that it's a year out of his life, and it is totally his right to say, "No", but I also think he is a bit spoiled. There are a lot of people who have careers that require as much work as being a Bond director; it's just they have to work those hours and he doesn't.
