Is it safe to assume we will know who it will be by this summer?

Some names thrown around...

Skyfall will be a tough act to follow BO wise. But if they have a strong story they have less to worry about.
I would rather go with Martin Campbell.
It would be a huge gamble to bring in someone new who doesn't at least have a child like enthusiasm for Bond like Sam did.

I'd go for Campbell or Danny Boyle, if they give it to Tarrantino Bond will end up loosing some sort of body part!!

Danny Boyle already said he doesn't want to make a Bond movie.

I think Campbell is too old now, he's 70 this year and mking Bond is very strenuous.

It wasn't awful but average. The first half of the movie killed it for me. Average action, too much dialogue, no thrill. The second half was good and I also liked the Scotland scenes.

No style for Mendes is maybe the wrong word. I think the right word is signature. He has no own signature. When I watch a Tarrantino, Fincher, Nolan, Hitchcock or Aronofsky I know I watch a movie from them. But with Mendes the movie could be also from another director like Tom Hooper. I still think he is overrated and had only one masterpiece (American Beauty) and one good movie (Revolutionary Road) the rest was average.

I still think Mendes used Skyfall to resurrect his career. Critics and box office proved he was succesful.

I like the fact that he has no signature.

As much as I like Tarantino or Nolan, recognizing that it is a movie directed by them makes it a bit boring and predictable for me.

He does have his own signature as outlined below, it's just not so glaringly obvious and in your face. Have a read courtesy of MI6, I found the article and discussion really interesting, insightful and perhaps highlights why Skyfall is so successful as a lot of things are rather subliminal. Enjoy.

Sam is an excellent director & yeah I loved that thread^

+ Deakins camera work & their work partnership w/Mendes is 1 of the things that put SF above the rest (i still prefer CR as a whole tho)

btw what about Martin Campbell

Describing Skyfall as too talky is more reflective of how the narrative in filming has action supplanting the need to listen and think much has txt spk is dumbing down our vocabulary and intelligent communication. Skyfall has deviated from that and enough people seem to have embraced the change from the flood of mind numbing entertainment.

It will be interesting to see, who them will come up with. Maybe not with the mos obvious choice.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..
