I would think, expressions like this with just your eyes can´t be just acting, Its going to those sources within yourself, that are similar in the emotion this guy is going through. But transferring them is what makes a good to great actor.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..
