Outback, then war and now independent film festival
IT'S not every child from outback Queensland who becomes a war cameraman for 10 years, works on an Oscar-winning documentary and starts the European Independent Film Festival -- and Scott Hillier is certainly not ordinary.
A former Channel Seven video editor in Sydney who earlier worked as a cameraman at Seven's Sunshine Coast studios and before that at SEQ Television, Hillier has packed an enormous amount into his 41 years.
Now based in Paris, where he is writing a film script to go to James Bond star Daniel Craig, Hillier's first job was as a tape operator at SEQ in Maryborough, in Queensland's Fraser Coast region.
"I just found myself doing it," he says. "I was 17 and it was a job."
After two years in that role he started to learn how to shoot news footage and eventually made his way to Sydney.
But with an itch to move overseas, he accepted a role producing the broadcast of the European Motorcyle Grand Prix from London.
When that finished eight months later, Hillier found himself in Baghdad as a freelance cameraman.
That was the start of a 10-year stint on the road, mostly for the BBC, during which he worked as a video producer in places such as Somalia, Sarajevo, Lebanon, Beirut, Amman, Nigeria, Botswana, the Kashmir Valley, Barbados, Ethiopia and Tunisia.
"There was a group of about 10 Aussie cameramen who lived in Cyprus (which became the base for most news organisations after Beirut became too dangerous) and travelled around the world," he says. "You would turn up at a coup in Moscow and there would be some of the group."
Hillier says the closest he came to being killed was in Chechnya when he found himself too close to an exploding Russian bomb.
"A lot of the people we went to ground with were killed," he says.
Looking back, Hillier says he was lucky to have managed the job for 10 years.
"I saw the most amazing things and saw history being made," he says. "I think the thing for me, it was just doing things that very few people could do ... and working particularly with the BBC with some of the most talented people in the world and watching history unfold.
"Imagine coming from the bush in Australia and being able to ride in on a tank to the Republic of Moldova. It was incredible."
But, he says, "in the end it was getting silly".
"I had a girlfriend killed in Somalia and by the end of it you end up losing a lot of friends. And after the Chechnya bombing I got home and my girlfriend -- who's now my wife -- said 'it's good to see you, I'm pregnant', so then I slowed down."
By coincidence Hillier was also in New York on September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers were attacked.
In the preceding months he had been working on a CBS documentary on New York's firefighters and police.
"We had been hanging out making films with them for three months. That morning (September 11) I couldn't get out of bed and then I took my daughter to school.
"Then I got into the subway and when I came up there were a million messages on my phone, including one from the fireys saying 'Come on down'. So I went to the office to get a camera, then raced down there calling the fire guys and cops, but unfortunately most of the cops died, as did a lot of the fireys."
Some of Hillier's footage was used in the documentary Twin Towers, which won the 2003 Oscar for documentary short subject. Hillier was the director of photography.
While in New York he also studied film at New York University and wrote and directed the short film Behind the Eyes of War, which was based on his Chechnyan experience.
It won the Best Dramatic Short Film award at the New York Independent Film and TV Festival in 1999.
But by 2002 Hillier and his French wife had returned to live permanently in Paris, and by 2005 he had launched the Paris-based festival.
Hillier says he learned after winning the New York prize how important festivals are for opening doors, but there was nothing in Europe like the Sundance Film Festival, which has given breaks to many independent film-makers.
"After I won in New York I got enough recognition to be able to talk to somebody to help me make another film, so I figured if you win Europe's best independent film, people will also look at you and you will get your next film produced," he says.
"So it stemmed from that, and despite myself it's turned into a big success and it's getting a good following."
The festival, which was held last month, attracted 1200 entries and 100 films were screened. Hillier says the only criterion for gaining entry to the festival was to have "a good story well told".
"If you have a good story and you have told it really well and it has a certain amount of soul and heart to it, we will play your film," he says.
The festival has 13 categories, of which four are for foreign films. "So I always try and play some Australian films here, not just because I'm Australian but because they warrant screening in Paris," he says.
"Our ethos is the discovery, screening and promotion of the best independent films from around the world, and there is no doubt that films that have shown here and won have gone on to bigger and better things."
Hillier says even though the French are protective of their film industry they have welcomed the European Festival being based in France.
"They have been brainwashed into believing they are the heart of Europe, so I'm lucky. I have a French national monument (the Bibliotheque National de France) housing the festival. They give me that even though they think it's a bit weird that there's an Australian guy running it."
Hillier says the standard of the films this year was outstanding. "From the student films to the features, it was just unbelievably good," he says.
Hillier says the festival has also increased his profile, enabling him to meet people who probably would not have seen him otherwise. "When I ring up as the president of the festival it's different to someone just pitching a script," he says.
Hillier is also currently working on three documentaries, which he hopes will be bought by National Geographic.
"I don't shoot much these days but am more producing and directing and I'm writing this script," he says.
After 20 years overseas, Hillier says he aims to eventually return to live in Australia. But if he does manage that, he says he'll still need to travel.
"I work on the idea that I have seen this much, but there's so much more to see," he says.

With the economy taking its toll on employed folks like a Slap Chop slicing through an onion, I've found myself without a job but with a huge stack of video games.
My backlog of games has made waiting in the virtual employment line tolerable, and I wanted to suggest a few underrated games that may have fallen off many CAGs' radars to kill some time until that next unemployment check.
1.) Quantum of Solace (Xbox 360, PS3)
This James Bond-licensed game utilizes the Call of Duty 4 engine, and features a better-than-expected multiplayer experience.
Although the single player is short (it took me about six hours) and unoriginal, it contrasts solid shooting sections with a few sneaking missions to stay true to Bonds' roots.
After plowing through the campaign, I hopped into the game's multiplayer, which features a similar matchmaking system that's found in the game's uber-popular cousin. It popped me into a game immediately, which means this game still has some legs left on the Xbox Live front.
This game was perfect to play around the house because my fiance is a huge Daniel Craig fan (he's apparently the sexiest man ever), so I was able to play it without many complaints - a big plus.
