.EXCLUSIVE: Ana de la Reguera on Daniel Craig: "He’s the Hottest Guy I’ve Ever Seen!"

We caught up with one of favorite actresses, Ana de la Reguera, to chat about her role in the upcoming summer blockbuster Cowboys & Aliens and found out all about her why she loves hanging with the boys and how it was working with Daniel Craig (hint, Ana enjoyed herself very, very much). Here's what she had to say:

Tell us about Cowboys Vs. Aliens!

It’s coming out July 29 and it’s a huge movie! It’s really fun. I think it’s going to be amazing. The story is really good, you don’t know what’s going on the whole time. You are finding everything out the way Daniel Craig (who plays the lead) does. It’s really interesting. It’s like an old-school western mixed with aliens and science fiction and big special effects and big stars. I don’t know why it took forever for someone to come out with something like this. You are mixing two amazing [genres]. I think it has great ingredients for the summer. John Favreau is an amazing director and the actors…I’m really happy!

How was it working with Mr. Bond himself, Daniel Craig?

It was crazy. He’s the hottest guy I’ve ever seen! He’s so hot. He’s in great shape. He’s just amazing. [laughs]

Um, we totally agree! So, what character do you play?

I play Maria, Sam Rockwell’s wife. They own a saloon. They are a very sweet couple. They care about each other. They deal with danger all the time. In the old westerns, there are a lot of fights in the town because there’s no money. That’s pretty much my character. And then, things happen, and you’ll see, but it’s a very sweet love story. I think it’s the most normal story in the whole movie. There’s a lot of horror. There’s a little kid and everyone is fighting for their loved ones. It’s a little love story. They’re either fighting for their kid or their love.

Were you a fan of westerns before you made this movie?

Not really to tell you the truth. I think they’re great stories, but I wasn’t… I like period films so that was great because it’s a period film and I like that.

It seems like you’re always starring in movies and on TV shows with mostly male casts. (Nacho Libre, Eastbound & Down, Cop Out). Do you like being the only woman in an all-boy’s club?

I do. I’m very comfortable being the love interest. I love it. I feel comfortable and I learn a lot. You’re always getting more attention because you’re with guys all the time.

How is that different from your very serious roles in the mostly female drama Cappadocia?[/b

]Well, it is a big drama about a woman living in prison so the feeling was completely different. But at the same time, you get tired of seeing girls all the time. You are in overalls with no makeup all day and no boys, so it’s not as much fun. But the stories are so good it doesn’t matter.

You’ve done quite a few dramas, but we LOVED your hysterical Kahlua commercials and your work on Eastbound & Down—you’re so funny! Do you prefer comedy or drama?

I love both. I’m pretty much a dramatic actress in Mexico, but here [in the U.S.] I’ve always done comedy, which I love. I think for me it’s harder to do comedy. With drama you can’t wrong—you know when someone’s going to feel bad or cry. With comedy, it’s harder. After so many takes you feel like you start to lose that spontaneity. That’s when I get nervous because I’m trying to make it like the first time. You have to be more real. Sometimes in drama it’s better when you repeat it because you start finding deeper stuff. In comedy, you have to find different things that make it fresh and real and new like it’s the first time.

A lot of really successful movie stars have accents. Do you think having a Latin accent gives an actress a little extra something?

I hope so! Actually I did a stronger accent [in Cowboys & Aliens], but I didn’t want to go over the top. I didn’t want to exaggerate it or make fun of it. I just wanted to make it a little bit stronger and fun. I happen to get a lot of roles because I have an accent too. Sometimes it’s good, and sometimes it is bad. I went on an audition for something and they said the other actor had a British accent and they didn’t want so many accents, or they want a Latina with no accent. But sometimes they ask for more accent. It’s just finding the right role for you and you don’t have to take it personally. I would love to have no accent so I could get more roles, but I’m working on that. I work hard. I’m trying to minimize the accent

In reading some of these articles one gets the feeling that Daniel is quite unique in being distinctly defined as a MAN and likened to McQueen, Eastwood, Ford, Bronson, Marvin, and the Van Cleef type of actors of yester year.

The industry now seems to be over saturated by pretty boys/men who are indistinguishable, interchangeable and disposable commodities cos there’s another one coming along on the conveyor belt .

Terrific post. I so agree. It's what makes him unique in the film industry today. Interchangeable pretty boys is dead right. There is no one else like him in his generation and the younger ones are even worse.

A friend just posted this quote she found. Don't know the source, but *sigh*

Will be able to offer my personal opinion this afternoon EST.
"Galloping across the desert, his inscrutable baby blues fixed on the horizon, Daniel Craig makes for a surprisingly convincing cowboy. Some actors, including a few in his new movie, “Cowboys & Aliens,” look too modern for old-timey roles. There isn’t enough grit, suffering, and poor nutrition in their faces, and their gestures and gaits are timed to the impatient rhythms of the information age. But Mr. Craig, with his brutally handsome face and coiled physicality, looks like a rawhide whip that’s just itching to get cracking."
Crazy!

Why We Still Can’t Take Our Eyes Off of Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig is not the sort of guy one fails to notice. Yet, the first time that I noticed Craig, he had already been acting on screen and in TV roles for a decade, though mostly in England. I discovered him in Road to Perdition, director Sam Mendes‘ 2002 drama about 1930s American gangsters. Craig played a mobster, the sadistic son of Paul Newman‘s crime boss. Despite stars Tom Hanks and Newman, whenever Craig was in a scene, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. He was menacing and slightly out of control and totally mesmerizing.

I remember that I made a point of looking up his name afterward in the credits. (At the time, I was the movie critic at People magazine.) Who is this guy, I wanted to know, and how can I see more of him? (Somehow, I had failed to take proper note of him a year earlier when he battled special effects and Angelina Jolie for attention in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, his first, big budget Hollywood effort.)

In Perdition, it was clear that Craig was the real deal, a heck of an actor and a genuine movie star. And so he remains today. He’s a big reason, along with the terrific title and Harrison Ford, that millions will line up this weekend to see his latest film, Cowboys & Aliens.

In it, the 43-year-old star plays an outlaw in the Old West who joins forces with a cattle baron (Ford) when invaders from outer space arrive in a dusty, small town. The movie delivers on the promise of its genre mash-up title – there are indeed cowboys battling with aliens – but C&A is never as much fun or as inventive as you keep hoping it will be. That said, Craig is a forceful presence throughout the film, offering an appealing performance (including doffing his shirt several times).

Of course, it’s the role of James Bond that made – and keeps – Craig an international star. He succeeded Irish-born Pierce Brosnan as 007 in 2006 in Casino Royale, a robust reboot of the franchise that explored Bond’s early years and served as an excuse to put Craig into a tight-fitting swimsuit.

He brought a brawniness to his Bond, the like of which hadn’t been seen since Sean Connery vigorously shook his martinis rather than stirring them. While Craig certainly appeared debonair enough in a tux, in both Casino and its 2008 follow-up, Quantum of Solace, he exuded an underlying tension and menace that brought a special charge to his Bond. (His third effort as 007 is currently in pre-production.)

Craig has been smart about branching out beyond Bond, though a couple of his higher profile choices (The Golden Compass and Defiance) have failed to find much of an audience. In his next film, Dream House, a psychological thriller that opens Sept. 30, he plays a man who discovers that the house into which he and his family have moved was previously the site of a grisly murder. (Rachel Weisz, Craig’s new real-life wife, plays his spouse in the movie.)

My favorite performances by Craig came in a trio of his earlier films – 2003’s The Mother, 2004’s Layer Cake and 2006’s Infamous – which serve to showcase his range.

In the romantic drama Mother, he plays a contractor who begins an affair with a widow (Anne Reid), twice his age, while he’s dating her daughter. In Layer Cake, the debut film by British director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class), Craig plays a London cocaine dealer who’s hoping to retire. And in Infamous, he portrays real life murderer Perry Smith, who was befriended by Truman Capote (brilliantly portrayed by British actor Toby Jones) while the author was researching his bestselling non-fiction book, In Cold Blood
Actually, my all-time favorite Daniel Craig performance is one in which he spoofs himself, to hilarious effect, in a faux reality show. It’s a short, shot as a fundraiser for BBC’s 2006 Red Nose Day charity effort, and purports to tell the story of his romance with comic actress Catherine Tate.

The high-concept pic, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, comes from DreamWorks and Universal.

Jon Favreau’s big-budget Cowboys & Aliens is looking at an opening weekend gross of $36 million to $43 million, and will need young males to turn out in force if it’s to hit the high end.

Based on tracking, most thought the DreamWorks and Universal pic would open in the $45 million range. Universal itself said low 40s to mid 40s.

According to very early estimates, Cowboys — starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford — should gross $14 million to $16 million on Friday. The pic earned a soft $700,000 in 1,200 midnight runs, a sign that younger fanboys didn’t turn out.

That’s not a huge surprise, considering Westerns generally appeal to an older audience, even if Cowboys movie is just as much of a sci-fi pic (Favreau likes to call his film a genre mash-up). Older males are the most interested in seeing the unique, high-concept film, but tracking was also relatively strong among males under the age of 25. Whether the tracking was misleading remains to be seen.

Cowboys is performing roughly 12 percent ahead of Paramount’s Super 8, also an original event film.

Super 8 grossed $13.1 million on its first Friday (including $500,000 in midnight shows), along with $1 million in special sneaks the pervious Thursday night. Super 8 went on to post an opening weekend gross of $36.5 million.

The big difference between the two movies is their cost. J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 reportedly cost $55 million to make, while Cowboys cost $163 million after tax rebates.

DreamWorks financed half of the budget, while Universal and Relativity Media each put up 25 percent.

Forecast: Can 'Cowboys & Aliens' Rope in Audiences?
by Brandon Gray
Cowboys & Aliens

July 28, 2011

This weekend, three new nationwide releases duke it out: Cowboys & Aliens rides on to approximately 5,600 screens at 3,750 locations, The Smurfs plucks around 5,400 screens at 3,395 locations (including 2,042 showing it in 3D), while Crazy, Stupid, Love. woos more than 3,300 screens at 3,020 locations. Throw in holdovers Captain America: The First Avenger and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and that's the Top Five for the weekend.

Historical antecedents point to a 50-60 percent drop for Captain America, which would give Cowboys & Aliens the edge to claim first place this weekend. On paper, an action spectacle directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man), starring Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones/Han Solo), co-written by Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci (Transformers, Star Trek), produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer and executive-produced by Steven Spielberg teams with box office potential. But Cowboys & Aliens has struggled in its extensive, year-long marketing campaign (including its Super Bowl spot). Sure, it has been more polished than Green Lantern's panicked ad spree, but most ads have made Cowboys & Aliens look like a half-baked Western and a half-baked alien-invasion movie shoe-horned together.

Cowboys & Aliens title, which is a riff on "cowboys and indians," is catchy, but it may have a Snakes on a Plane effect: title tells all in a goofily blunt way, so no need to see the movie. The premise does raise the stakes on the typical alien invasion movie by having lower-tech humans, though that's somewhat contradicted by giving Craig an alien weapon from the start. The marketers have tried to mitigate the potential silliness by taking a serious approach and presenting the Western portion first. There's a lot of Craig not saying much (in a nod to Clint Eastwood) in a cliche Western and some grumpy Ford (though none of the Ford that audiences love), and then aliens randomly attack. Recent ads have included more interaction between Craig and Ford, though not to the level their casting asks for.

One can hope that the True Grit has primed audiences for more Westerns, and that the Western angle will make the alien invasion angle seem fresh. Hybridized Westerns, though, often fail, including Wild Wild West, Jonah Hex and The Warrior's Way ("Cowboys and Ninjas"), and, True Grit aside, regular Westerns generally don't reach mass audiences. The cross-genre exercise seems more for movie buffs and fan boys than for the general public. Perhaps aware of all of this, Cowboys & Aliens' ads have featured the line "We have one advantage. They underestimate you." Maybe that relentless marketing has turned the corner for this movie. Distributor Universal Pictures did report a last-minute expectation in the $40 million range.

Box Office Mojo's "when will you see it" polling hasn't provided a clear read on Cowboys & Aliens, perhaps due to the picture's genre mash-up. With an "opening weekend" score in the 34-35 percent range, interest seemed less intense than fellow alien movies Super 8 (47.1 percent), District 9 (46.2 percent) and Battle: Los Angeles (44.8 percent), which didn't bode well. However, its voting pattern was comparable to Fantastic Four (36.5 percent opening weekend) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (29.4 percent), which was a positive sign. These comps suggested a spread of $26-53 million.

The Forecast, July 29-31
1. Cowboys & Aliens - $36 million
2. Captain America: The First Avenger - $29 million
3. The Smurfs - $26 million
4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - $23.5 million
5. Crazy, Stupid, Love. - $19 million
