too fake, i'd rather hear his real accent. i've never been much impressed with his accents, though his ted hughes attempt isn't too bad.Faustine wrote:why not?????marsbean_mrsfishy wrote:yummy yummy yummy. i love all of alex except his accentFaustine wrote: I love Alex´s ass

Wait what kind of accent did he do for Ted Hughes? Sorry, I haven't seen this movie for a long time.marsbean_mrsfishy wrote:too fake, i'd rather hear his real accent. i've never been much impressed with his accents, though his ted hughes attempt isn't too bad.Faustine wrote:why not?????marsbean_mrsfishy wrote: yummy yummy yummy. i love all of alex except his accent
I thought his American accent in Tomb Raider sounds OK. I remember maybe only one word or two which doesn't sound quite right. His broad Brooklyn-type accent as the American soldier in Fateless is good, too. I can only talk about his American accent since I’m an American.Faustine wrote:why not?????marsbean_mrsfishy wrote:yummy yummy yummy. i love all of alex except his accentFaustine wrote: I love Alex´s ass
Accents must be difficult for actors to maintain in intense scenes. Even Russell Crowe, who critics say does a good American accent, slips (my opinion) in The Insider.
Does it seem like the sound, the timbre, of DC’s voice changes when he does accents? It seems like that to me.
From an interview in The Observer from 2003:gugita14 wrote:Wait what kind of accent did he do for Ted Hughes? "In truth, though, Craig has examined Hughes's accent a little more closely than that, and found in the voice itself a minor tragedy. 'If you listen to it,' he says, 'his accent does not exist. Nowhere on earth does that accent exist - it's absolutely peculiar to Ted Hughes. He came down from Yorkshire and went to Cambridge and, of course, he got rid of it. What he did was he flattened it out. It's his interpretation of what a posh accent should sound like, but not too posh because he's from the north. It's bizarre - and heartbreaking. Feeling that you have to mask it and not mask it.'
I’m sorry if I sound preoccupied with accents! I’m just a clueless American on that topic. It’s just that it’s so interesting. Actually, it’s DC’s accent which is interesting to me. What kind of accent does he have?
Someone here once posted that it’s RP (what’s RP?), except you can tell he came from the north when he says “Get the girl out!” in Casino Royale, right after he loses to Mads Mikkelsen and picks the knife up from a table. What is it about “Get the girl out” that doesn’t sound RP?

DC is from the North of England, but he admits to not have a very strong 'Northern' accent. But far from 'Posh.'cornell01 wrote:I’m sorry if I sound preoccupied with accents! In Defiance it's a Polish accent he's striving for, which in my opinion, sounds pretty good from what I can tell in the trailer.
But his American accent has been getting better. It was painful to hear in Tomb Raider. I thought in Infamous he got it right. But a friend disagrees with me, saying it's nowhere near a Mid-western accent. What would I know, I'm from the East.
Crazy!

hey cornell, thanks for that snippet from the press, it was interesting. yeah, his ted hughes accent was yorkshire-based, but developed beyond that into a bit more of a southerner thing, so it was precisely as described, just about. i thought it was very sensitively done, and is part of why Sylvia is just about my favourite Dan film, even though he did slip occasionally.
yes, i do feel the timbre of his voice changes when he does accents, particularly in tomb raider, which is why, generally, i'd rather he didn't bother lol. he's not bad, exactly, at accents, it's just he does always slip out at some point or another.
we have discussed his accents somewhere in this forum before, at least once, but i've no idea where one'd find those convos as the forum has gotten so big nowadays lol.
RP stands for 'Received Pronunciation', which is what he will have been taught in drama school, and is like standard, smart non-accented english, which is pretty much how he does normally speak, though there are definite hints of northernness in amongst it, i'm not sure about 'get the girl out', and i can't think of any specific examples just now, but i'll have a think, and if i get chance watch CR to check it out (any excuse, eh?!).
i'm afraid i haven't seen defiance or infamous yet (i'm so deprived!), but another accent worthy of note is his South African in Munich, again, bits were ok but it did leave much to be desired imho.

Thanks for the correction on RP, you learn something new everyday!marsbean_mrsfishy wrote:RP stands for 'Received Pronunciation', which is what he will have been taught in drama school, and is like standard, smart non-accented english, which is pretty much how he does normally speak, though there are definite hints of northernness in amongst it, i'm not sure about 'get the girl out', and i can't think of any specific examples just now, but i'll have a think, and if i get chance watch CR to check it out (any excuse, eh?!).

We've only been blessed with the trailer for Defiance, so we are all deprived on that. But you really need to see Infamous. A great performance IMO.

I, as South American, except the distinction American- British accent cannot do much any more.
In Tomb Raider and in Fateless he has a very nasal voice has, which displeases me enough.
In Defiance for what I listened in the trailer there are two different pronunciations: when he says this phrase on which they will protect them and when he says that every day of freedom is an act of faith.. but when he speaks when is on the horse ... I listen to a perfect english accent
We convince ourselves that we know the other person well, but do we really know anything important about anyone.

Americans tend to sound nasal. And on the horse, though not a perfect Polish accent, not quite completely English either. IMO. We will just have to wait and see.Faustine wrote:In Tomb Raider and in Fateless he has a very nasal voice has, which displeases me enough.Elaine_Figgis wrote:DC is from the North of England, but he admits to not have a very strong 'Northern' accent. I will wait patiently and will say more later ... but when I saw the trailer I threw a guffaw... remembered me The Ice House's intermittent accentElaine_Figgis wrote:Americans tend to sound nasal.
