The Finnish media finally woke up! From today's Helsingin Sanomat, a briefish article based on the press conference in Stockholm.

Image

Nothing out of the ordinary; Daniel says he can't really evaluate his performance as Bond at all, talks about civil servants and how he hopes Bond tries to do his duty and do it well for King and country (and notices how serious the bit was and goes: "Bond likes cars, women and champagne." The writer also talks a bit about how elusive "real" Daniel is in all the fuss and commotion of the junket - he points out the same stuff as everyone else: Daniel is relaxed, talks a lot, is friendly but at the same time keeps his distance. His self deprecating is charming. :D The revealing bits come as additions to the main things he saying like friends are important "at least the ones still left"... :( And wearing a hat is not enough, people still point fingers at him... The end is about Marc Forster.

"Quantum of Solace" press junket: Meet my homey, Daniel Craig!

I write this in the press suite of the Mandarin Oriental in Miami, sipping the tiny catering bottle of Diet Coke that Daniel Craig opened for me with his one good arm.

Dance break!

OK, I'm back. I don't have long - going to talk to Olga the Bond Girl next - but I just wanted to talk about the bare bones of our conversation:

1) We immediately bonded over our connection to Baltimore, where I'm from, and where his doctors at Johns Hopkins repaired his bum shoulder. Also, he told me that he found out about being the next Bond while shopping at the Fells Point Whole Foods, which I know well. So cool.

2) He's having a ball, and said he's finally become comfortable in the role.

3) He's incredibly friendly and down-to-earth, and sounds like those guys you meet at a pub.

4) He doesn't know when the next Bond will be because of the market and the economy, but thinks people need movies like this.
More soon!

He has a connection to Johns Hopkins through Barbara Broccoli. The US premiere of QoS will be in Baltimore to benefit the Cubby Broccoli Center for Aortic Disease at Johns Hopkins. The last 5 or 6 Bond movies premiered at benefits for that part of Johns Hopkins medical center.

Isn't it surprising that there aren't paparazzi photos of him during this LA trip? And where is Satsuki Mitchell?

Stana Katic Calls 'Quantum' A Homage To Early James Bond Films
Video interview with the newest Bond girl
Written by Devin Zydel on 22 Oct, 2008
Stana Katic gave a brief video interview to Hollyscoop about working on the 22nd James Bond film, Quantum of Solace.
Katic, who stars as Corinne Veneau, an associate of the mysterious villain Yusef, called Quantum of Solace a ‘homage to old Bond films from the 1960’s. I think Marc Forster brings a realism to it and a suspense to it that a lot of audiences today will be looking forward to and be really shocked by.’
Asked how she felt when she landed the role, Katic said: ‘My dad’s a real big Bond fan, so I’ve seen a lot of Bond movies. Sean Connery is just brilliant. Definitely, it was a real honour to play on a Bond film and to be able to play with Marc Forster, who is a brilliant director.’
‘Daniel Craig is very charming,’ she continued. ‘I think he’s got a greater sense of humour than a lot of people know about. He’s wonderful. He’s very, very sweet. He’s fantastic. A really, really, sweet gentleman.’
Watch this interview online at Brightcove.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

Hi cornell - as you say, there are no paps from there and I think, we normally only see here in these or the events. He is in too good a mood, as that there could be problems in the relation IMO.

NextBondGirl wrote:I will NEVER listen to bad reviews until I see the movie myself and, to be honest, the mere fact that Daniel is in it means it's gonna be good.

How many times have I been to see a movie that the critics raved about and I thought it was shite? (Example - Lost In Translation). And how many times have I been to see a movie that the critics hated and I loved every minute? (Example - The Mummy 3).

You can just never predict what is going to be the reaction to any particular movie. I personally think that movie critics don't know their arses from their elbows. I hope Daniel doesn't pay too much attention to them!
Same here. I strangely love the films labeled as 'failures' by critics like 4 example Torque and Beverly Hills Ninja  not the 'masterpieces' like Dark Knight etc.

But I prefer the producers to really be able to read the reviews and understand and correct their mistakes (it seems they are too much action, too Bourne, the lack of depth and humour/irony) in the future.
I feel incredibly sorry for Forster who without any reason gave all the reign to Bradley. Though he's a good 2nd Unit Director but has 'Bourne' written all over him.
Dont get me wrong, I like the 1st Bourne and don't mind Bourne-like action but to use shaky camera in Qos is 1 Huge mistake because it serves nothing here! I think it would have been great to shoot action in a Bourne way but shown with beauty and glamour.

It's actually the main problem I will have with the movie I suppose but we'll see it in the cinema. Even with all its imperfection to see our brilliant bruised blue eyed hero will be worth 3 or 4 trips to the movie theater

BOND star DANIEL CRAIG looks like The Man With The Golden GURN as he learns to freefall for a stunt in new 007 film Quantum Of Solace.
The wind tunnel left Craig — whose character Bond appeared in The Man With The Golden Gun — looking shaken and stirred as he practised for a stunt where a plane is shot down.

The usually suave star, 40, sported a blue jumpsuit, goggles, white socks and trainers during three months of training at the flight centre in Beds.

Craig said: “It was extremely difficult and very dangerous.”

An instructor replaced him in harder scenes.

Bond girl co-star GEMMA ARTERTON, 22, treated herself to a shopping trip in London yesterday after also doing her own stunts.

Meanwhile, her predecessor URSULA ANDRESS — who played Honey Ryder in 1962’s Dr No — was named sexiest Bond girl in a poll. Casino Royale won best film.

He's very popular here, has a show on The Comedy Channel. It would be incredible if Daniel were to appear on his show.

Colbert pretends to be very conservative in his political views, but ends up making it look so silly. Watch the video here to get an idea.

Quantum of Solace
B-
November 14, 2008

At least one or two notches below the artistic level of its predecessor, "Casino Royale," which was one of the best Bonds ever, "Quantum of Solace" is a sharply uneven movie, in which the sum total is not better than its constituting parts. Essentially a dark (in moments really noirish) revenge melodrama, the picture delivers the expected goods of a Bond serial by now, big action set pieces, glamorous foreign locales, some good punch lines (though not enough), and strong central performance from Daniel Craig, who impressively refuses to turn his character into a standard and iconic creation.

However, under Marc Forster's cold and detached if proficient helming, the movie lacks an engaging story, an emotional core and soul. It's as if the long-time producers, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, set out to make a movie in the mold of "Casino Royale," but then also decided to execute it quickly, without paying much attention to characterization, coherent plot or even a solid arc for the fragmented story, which begins and stops and begins a number of times in the course of a relatively short time (running times is less than hours).

After a splashy action set-piece at the very beginninga chase scene that is not particularly well shot or editedand a rather weak and fractured first reel, the movie actually improves, and in the later chapters, Forster is able to demonstrate again that he is a good actor's director.

"Quantum of Solace" is just as noteworthy for what it excludes out as for what it includes vis--vis the previous chapter and the franchise series as a whole. Marking the first direct sequel produced by EON productions, "Quantum of Solace" picks up the storyline juts one hour after the end of "Casino Royale." But in many significant ways, the two films could not have been more different, largely a result of the scenario, credited to the team of Neal Purvis and Robert Wade and Paul Haggis.

For those who need a reminder: Fueled, enraged, and saddened by the betrayal of Vesper (Eva Green), the woman he loved and trusted, Bond determines to track down and punish her killer. His determination actually becomes an obsession that almost costs him his humanityhe shoots in cold bloodand Craig is excellent in portraying an angry man, who almost plunges to the lower depth of depression and psychosis.

Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M interrogate Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) who reveals the organization which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than they had imagined.

Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organization.

On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the worlds most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio). Using his associates in the organization, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.

The saga piles up incidents of treachery, murder and deceit, stressing how Bond has always allied with old friends in his battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel and stop Greenes sinister plan.

True to form, the yarn uses a number of retardation devices to keep the level of suspense. Hence, Camille's motivation in engaging in such a risky action is initially unclear, and revealed in the last reel in a long monologue. As expected, though attracted to each other, the two separate, but we know it's only a matter of time before they remeet, join forces, and perhaps even exchange a kiss. (The only sex scene in the picture is between Bond and another femme).

If the trail gets more complicated, it doesn't get more involving. Ironically named Greene, Amalric plays him as a villain of the old school (with a heavy French accent to match), a greedy capitalist who realizes that there's a fortune to be made out of controlling one scarce resource, water (regards to "Chinatown").

As noted, throughout the story, Bond is in contact with his supervisor M, again played by Judi Dench, in a part that seems bigger and bigger with each installment. M has never really trusted Bond, and in this picture, she even fires him from his job, only to be told that you can't fie James Bond! It takes some time for M to realize how crucial is Bond's role in the politics of the new, ever-shifting world, in which you can trust no one.

Bringing in some ideas from the Cold War, "Quantum of Solace" posits The U.S. versus the British government and First World versus Third World countries. The political context doesn't make much sense, and you feel that the scribes are paying a lip service to political revolutions and decadent military regimes. Also shallow is the use of au courant ecological and environmental themes, which often come across as mere reflection of the zeitgeist.

The exotic locations (a staple of every Bond picture) distract attention from the schematic, unengaging story up to a point. Reportedly, this production shot in more locations overseas than any other Bond movie in the 46-year-James Bond franchise (Still the longest series in film history). Included in the touristy views are such places as Panama City and Colon in Panama, the Atacama Desert in Chile, Sienna (where the story begins), Carrara, Lake Garda, and Fonteblanda in Italy, Bergenz in Austria, and one spectacular aerial sequence, in which Bond's aircraft is about to explode in the air, in San Felipe, Mexico.

In general, "Quantum of Solace" is an old-fashioned vengeance saga in the guise of a postmodern yarn that goes out of its way to be fresh, but ends up reminding us how calculated a machine the James Bond picture has become, with or without its products placement, which in this film are kept to a minimum.

Del Toro, Cuaron in QUANTUM OF SOLACE?

Yes, yes they are. Seriously, I didn't see that one coming. Apparently both have speaking roles in the new film, they will be voicing other characters.

Mexican film directors Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron will both have voice roles in the new James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."

"Quantum" director Marc Foster tells the newspaper El Universal in an interview published Wednesday that he knows both directors and asked them to portray members of a fictional Bolivian army.

Del Toro, whose films include the "Hellboy" movies and "Pan's Labyrinth," does several voices. "Children of Men" director Cuaron will perform the speaking part of a helicopter pilot.

Parts of the movie, starring Daniel Craig, were filmed in Chile and Panama.
