Okay and thanks for the location article. Interesting.
The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

Comments from Barbara and Michael at the Southbank Arts Awards...

^^ Also posted in the Bond24 thread.

And about Sam opting out

“We’re devastated,” Michael G Wilson tells me at the South Bank awards, organised by Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Arts. “We didn’t expect it, so I have no idea who will replace him. We’re still reeling. We only found out a day before the announcement. I think he feels like he’s done it now, but hopefully we can tempt him back.”
Barbara Broccoli, for her part, adds: ”It’s a ------, isn’t’ it? We’re very sad he’s decided not to do it as we really wanted him on board.”

found this on IMDB
(Full-length version on YouTube so you can see what I mean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aLmMigqPco)

Right after the section with the Chinese dragons finishes with a ball of fire, there is some disturbing imagery of a man in a chair...

It is only brief flashes, but he seems to be tied to the chair, thrashing in agony and with his face blindfold.

Could this be Silva during his torture? It does follow the reference to China and he later ties Bond to a chair as well as telling of his agony, of course. If so, this is Silva's second appearance in the titles, after he crops up previously as a gun-wielding shadow in the crypt-like scene where Bond has been shooting at shadows of himself.

Marvellous sequence, anyway. More symbolism here than in all the previous 22 films' titles put together!
I just watched the video and it's there  blink and you miss it.
Smart!

^^ I've wondered about that bit for months, but I'm still not sure if it's supposed to be Silva or Bond or both. Like that other bit mentioned there - Bond shooting at his shadows and then we (and Bond, obviously) see Silva as a shadow... having a bullet hole in the same place on his chest as Bond.

The whole idea of them being different sides of the same coin, mirror images of each other, is fascinating. And all those mirrors in the movie are obviously not there by chance.

I agree with that writer about the amount of symbolism. The whole movie is layered like a huge onion. So much stuff to notice and ponder. I just realized yesterday why Severine had to be shown smoking, wrote about it on MI6 and nobody commented, which can either mean that it had always been obvious to everyone else, or they thought I was just writing crap. :P But seriously... fire breathing dragons... her boat being called Chimera (a fire-breathing female creature consisting of various animals, including snake or dragon), her "animal" nails... so, she was smoking, blowing out smoke (not discreetly, but in a way that one's attention is drawn to it), makes sense to me...

And speaking of animals, I think I'll need to look into stags and lions, too.

And I still haven't read properly about the battle of Trafalgar, and I need to look at that painting on the new M's wall a bit closer, but I'll get there some day.

I'm sure there are tons of things that haven't even occurred to me, yet.

NB: I haven't seen the SF commentaries :( due to not owning a blu-ray player, so apologies if I'm way off...

Not way off  I've not seen the complete commentaries either, just a bit here and there, but the idea of Silva and Bond being different sides of the same coin is addressed by Mendes.

He's supposed to be Bonds doppelganger, a fallen angel, the negative image of Bond hence Bond in a black jacket, Silva in a white jacket. Silva is what Bond could have been if he had turned bad.

I had to laugh when Mendes told that when Jarvier turned up on set nobody recognized him at first.....

Nothing new, it's an old interview with Ben Whishaw.

sounds a bit like Daniel
On the subject of his private life, he politely declines to answer questions. He explains: “For me, it’s important to keep a level of anonymity. As an actor, your job is to persuade people that you’re someone else. So if you’re constantly telling people about yourself, I think you’re shooting yourself in the foot.”
Beyond that, he has no grand scheme. “I have never had a plan — no, no, no,” he says, shaking his head vigorously. “All I ever wanted to do was act. If I can keep working with good people and doing the things I love, that’s really enough for me.”

from http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter ... 37473.html
On the surface, screenwriter and playwright John Logan's latest characters couldn't be more different. There was his Bond, James Bond, a damaged, Martini-swilling, villain-chasing, girl-getting Bond – and the highest grossing 007 ever in Skyfall. Now there are Peter and Alice, in his play of the same name – the real people on whom J M Barrie's Peter Pan and Lewis Carroll's Alice were based, and who did actually meet once. You're thinking children's books and youthful innocence, Neverland and Wonderland ….

But Logan is convinced that the trick to making both Skyfall and Peter and Alice, starring Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw, work for an audience, be they popcorn-munchers or sauvignon-sippers, is taking the characters seriously.

"I have no interest in light plays. I'm only interested in ..." – he pauses – "... plumbing something serious." And the 51-year-old American chalks up Skyfall's huge success to a similar approach. Although happiest in the theatre, he insists he's also "deadly serious" about film work (which includes scripts for Hugo, Sweeney Todd, The Aviator and Gladiator).

Logan is quick and sharp, as swift to laugh impishly as he is to make these unembarrassed statements of solemn sincerity. It clearly pays off; while Skyfall was stylish and stuffed with thrilling setpieces, it also gave Bond a new gravity. "We took the character seriously, we took the world seriously, there were consequences to the action. People liked seeing that behind the Martini and the Aston Martin and the tuxedo, there's a very flawed man. We always talked about this as Bond re-appraising his life. It was a movie about resurrection."

I ask if being a gay man might have affected his version of Bond. Logan, now signed up for the next two Bond movies, suggests it was more that he was one of many "first-timers" working on it, bringing a fresh approach to the franchise. Although, he adds with a twinkle, it may have helped in that interrogation scene between Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem.

He quickly adds that, actually, a "homoerotic undertone" is present in Ian Fleming's books (all of which Logan had, coincidentally, read the year before director Sam Mendes got him on board.) "We thought it was time to really embrace it .... It was a juicy scene to write."

*

--- The pair have still managed to attract starry names (Daniel Radcliffe, Jude Law, David Walliams), and Dench and Whishaw seem perfect for this play. "They were our dream cast, and they thankfully said yes," says Logan, adding with a chuckle that "it helped that we were all doing Skyfall at the time – we could have the odd discussion over the catering table!"

He's tight-lipped about the next two Bond films, although it has been announced that Mendes won't be involved. I can't winkle a single plot detail out of him; he apologises, saying that work on Bond is "like you work for MI6 – you say nothing." ---
