Agent 007 Daniel Craig Taking 'Quantum Of Solace' Oscar Over Buzz Flick 'Defiance'
Believe it or not, Daniel Craig is more than just James Bond and the guy that almost played Thor. He’s also a solid dramatic actor who has performed some impressive work in films like “Munich.”
And after “Quantum of Solace” returns him to 007’s tuxedo, Craig will get dramatic again with “Defiance,” an Oscar-bait flick which opens at the end of this year. “It’s a true story set in World War 2,” explained producer Marshall Herskovitz, whose Bedford Falls production company is making the film. “This is very different from James Bond.”
Co-starring Liev Shreiber and Jamie Bell, the flick is directed by the man behind Oscar-nominees “Blood Diamond” and “The Last Samurai.” “Ed Zwick just directed it in Lithuania this year,” Herskovitz explained. “It’s really quite an amazing film, and we’re very proud of it.”
“The film is basically about these 3 brothers, and Daniel Craig is one of them, who run into the woods when the Germans invade in 1941 and they end up saving a huge number of Jews, 1200 people they saved,” he said of the script, based on real events. “It’s an amazing true story; there is a moment in the film with these people who have just been through hell, living in the woods through the winter and all that. They capture a German soldier and what happens in that moment - and what you see on Daniel Craig’s face - is really quite extraordinary.”
According to Herskovitz, it’s an awards-worthy performance that will show us a side of Craig we’ve never seen before. “The thing about Daniel is that those of us in the business who have been watching his performances for years have been saying this guy is going to be a big star, he is one of those people like Steve McQueen, who combines this charisma, this incredible look, that’s not even about handsome or not handsome, it’s just an amazing, masculine, wonderful, attractive look,” he said of his star. “So when you find those things together in a person, watch out!”
