Short sharp Solace, promises new Bond director!
Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster has revealed that his new film will be the shortest James Bond adventure ever, clocking in at just over one hour and 40 minutes.

During round table interviews with reporters from across the world in London last week, which guardian.co.uk/film also attended, Forster told Cinematical.com that he had approached the movie as a "compact emotional intense journey".

"The movie is, you know, a little over an hour and 40 minutes, so it's much of a more compact emotional intense journey than Casino," said Forster.

"I don't know if [the action scenes] top Casino Royale, but I think they work for Quantum of Solace, and throughout there's a certain intensity that's created that the movie I feel is really a ride, and it's a ride with Bond, and it's I think an intense one."

Quantum of Solace features the return of Daniel Craig, who made his debut as 007 in 2006's Casino Royale. The new film is a direct sequel to the earlier feature - another first for Bond - kicking off around half an hour in real time after the end of Casino Royale, which was the first for many years to take its cue from an original novel by Ian Fleming.

Solace chronicles Bond's efforts to track down the ruthless international organisation which had a part in the death of his lover Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale. His journey takes him to Italy, Austria and South America, where he encounters the villainous Frenchman Dominic Greene, a purported environmentalist who is in fact trying to take over the water supply of Bolivia by staging a coup d'etat.

The film's short running time is unusual because James Bond films typically run to at least the two-hour mark, and Casino Royale was a whopping 144 minutes long. Given that the new film does not have its predecessor's basis in a Fleming original, some fans may wonder if that suggests a lack of confidence in their material on the part of the film-makers this time around.

Read Daniel Craig's answers to Guardian readers' questions, and we'll have more on the film blog later today, including Forster's responses to your questions, and the pick of responses from Craig and Forster to questions from other fans around the world.

Quantum of Solace drops legendary Bond introduction

It’s THE most famous introduction in movie history, a line that has appeared in 21 films over 46 years and has come to embody everything about the world’s longest running film franchise. But Quantum of Solace will not feature the immortal line “the name’s Bond. James Bond”. Also hitting the cutting room floor is his other famous quip on how to prepare his trademark vodka martini drink “shaken not stirred”. So, why the drastic changes and will they help or hinder Daniel Craig’s return as the smooth super-spy?

“There was a “Bond, James Bond” in the script,” explains the film’s director, Marc Forster. “There are several places where we shot it as well, but it never worked as we hoped. I just felt we should cut it out, and Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson [the film’s producers] agreed, and Daniel [Craig] agreed, too. It’s nice to be open-minded about the Bond formula. You can always go back to them later on.”

But what do the Bond experts make of the omission? Graham Rye, editor of the 007 online magazine considers it a return to the Bond of the Ian Fleming books. “His announcing of himself had become a bit corny,” he says. “Casino Royale gets back to the spirit of the books, rather than all the silliness.” In agreement is Ajay Chowdhury, editor of the Bond fab club magazine Kiss Kiss Bang Bang who adds: “If this line of script is not in there it’s not going to undo the foundations of Bond. The fans didn’t miss Moneypenny or Q. Bond is the only British character with worldwide resonance now, apart from Harry Potter. The producers are paying more attention to psychology and relationships, as well as adventure.”

It’s one in a long line of radical departures for the evergreen franchise since its 2006 reboot and its not only survived the changes but risen to even greater popularity with them. And so with Bond enjoying such a high, is anyone really going to complain about a few lines of missed dialogue?

Sophie Harley’s Algerian Love Knot Necklace Captures Starring Role in New James Bond Movie

Sophie Harley’s stunning contemporary take on an ancient style Algerian Love Knot necklace claims a starring role in the forthcoming James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, to be premiered 31st October and on-screens from November 08.

Sophie Harley, London based celebrity designer, was approached by the film production team to produce this important piece for the sequel to Casino Royale.

The intricate necklace combines Sophie’s strongest inspirations to create a piece of jewellery that is both ancient and contemporary in style. Incorporating ancient symbols, philosophy and iconography, the piece is as intriguing as the plot and has captured the eyes, minds and hearts of a worldwide audience.

Following the approach from the Casino Royale Bond team, the Algerian Love Knot was born. The piece is seen on leading lady, Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), and will be featured in the forthcoming new movie as central to one of the underlying plot lines.

To celebrate the launch of the new film, Sophie has produced a GBP15,000 solid 18ct gold and diamond encrusted version of the Algerian Love Knot necklace, alongside the original version of the love knot seen in the film, available at a retail price of GBP1,940 (sterling).

The Algerian Love Knot necklace is a beautiful and intricate work of art combining ancient goldsmithing techniques with bold contemporary design. The love knot is also an ancient symbol of enduring and eternal love.

Each piece is hand crafted in Sophie’s London studios, supply is limited and available to order direct from Sophie Harley Design on +44(0)207-430-2070 or via website: http://www.sophieharley.com.

Good grief, there REALLY is an Algerian love knot  It sounded so silly that I assumed it was dreamed up by Purvis & Wade...

Can't remember that I have read that before

Daniel Craig's naked butt revealed

'I'm not that unusual'...says hottie Daniel Craig who goes nude for his first ever production venture - Flashbacks of a Fool.

How did you get involved with the project?
Baillie Walsh is a friend of mine. He wrote this script five or six years ago, with me in mind. It's a kind of biography for him, but he wanted to include me in the film. We've been discussing it ever since! Fortunately things came together in 18 months.
Why did you want to work with Baillie?
I've always wanted to see Baillie make movies. I've always had a great deal of confidence in him. It's just one of those things of saying: Let's try and see what happens if we can put together a movie! One of the hardest things about putting a movie together is raising the money, and luckily enough, since I had a bit of success last year with some other movie, people decided to start spending some money on us.

Tell us about your character Joe Scott...
Joe is a washed out movie-star. He's comfortably well off and lives in a very nice place, but his stars are starting to fade... He takes to drugs and doesn't have his feet on the ground. He has lost contact with himself. The one person that really cares for him is Ophilia, and probably she's the love of his life. But she's sitting in front of him, and he doesn't even notice. So their relationship is almost sibling like... He was a very hard person for me to play...

Can you relate to your character?
I had a very happy upbringing; I was very protected and looked after. But you feel the guilt about leaving home, and moving on. For parents it's an awful thing. On one hand you want to see your children succeed and go on, on the other hand you want to protect them. Children succeed because they have confidence, and that confidence is your own doing as a parent. You don't get to understand that until later on in life. And when you're young things matter much less, because all you are trying to do is get on and survive. Yes, I can relate to this character by empathising that maybe he wasn't as lucky as I have been so far.

How was is working with Eve Jeffers?
We were really fortunate to get Eve on board. We were really struggling, because you are asking someone to come all the way to South Africa, it's a long journey to make and also on paper, the part doesn't appear to be huge. But she understood immediately that the relationship between Joe and Ophilia, the character she is playing, is the most important part of the movie. They are all they've got for each other and that's why they are together. Eve's incredibly beautiful, she's a really good actress and we have to be grateful that she agreed to play the part.

Why would you recreate England in South Africa?
We shot on a beach in South Africa that was about 20 km long, it was sand dunes all the way. In Devon, there might be a beautiful beach like that, but it'd be only five miles long... This one went that extra yard. For Baillie it was important to get that epic proportion on screen, and that wouldn't be delivered by any of our beautiful English beaches.

What appealed to you about the film?
I connected very deeply with it, and for that very reason I think other people will too, because I'm not that unusual. And I wouldn't do the film unless I thought it had a universal theme within it. Beyond that, I think it looks stunning.

Thanks for posting Dunda. We don't mind reposts here at DtD. I don't know why some people get bent over articles that have been out before or posted before. Everybody isn't privy to everything everyone has and we don't all read the same threads here at DtD. There are new fans all the time that are just learning and tuning in also. I've introduced 3 people in the last few months to Daniel.

Great read and I'll never get tired of promoting Daniel.

Post by joelle »

I know its been awhile since I last wrote on the site. But newsflash which I had to share...my son goes to a local school and his friend told him that his mother said F.... Off to Daniel Craig in a shop in the county of Yorkshire..he kept brushing past her and alas she lost her temper....now now girls lets be positive about this if it was you or me he kept brushing past we would have been in 7th heaven. If Daniel ever reads we are not like that at all but if you wish us to chaperone you and show the treasures of Yorkshire you need only ask.......I thought maybe Daniel fell over in the shop after this lady said what she did and hurt his arm....

The top notch acting in the Weisz/Craig/Spall 'Betrayal' is emotionally true, often v funny and its beautifully staged with filmic qualities..

Liam Neeson talks Taken and jokes about kicking Bond's privates

Liam Neeson would "kick Daniel Craig in the privates" if they had a fight.

Although the Irish actor admits the James Bond star would have the upper hand in a brawl, Neeson - who plays a highly-skilled former government agent in new film 'Taken' -would not be afraid to give him a low blow.

He told BANG Showbiz: "Daniel has all the hardware and technology. But I'd certainly kick him in the privates."

Neeson, 56 - who is a former boxer, holding the Youth Heavyweight Champion of Ireland title for three consecutive years - admits Craig could probably beat him if they squared up in the boxing ring.

He said: "Daniel would win in a fight. He's younger."

The actor has also revealed he met several real life spies to prepare for 'Taken'.

He added: "I met a couple of interesting people who have worked for various governments in a very secretive way. They were very helpful.

"The things they have done make the scenes in my film look like 'Sesame Street'.

"They told me some interesting stories but wouldn't reveal any top secret information."

'Taken' is released in the UK this month and worldwide by early 2009.
